What is this part and does it need replaced?

I noticed this rubber piece looks like it has seen better days on my 2005 Silverado. Anyone know what it is? Easy fix?

outer tie rod end, and probably is about due to be replaced, may also want to check the inner as well, and the pitman arm and idler arm, they wear out alot.

The tierods are a very easy fix. You can get all the parts and wrenchs at an Autozone or Oriellys or what ever you have near you. You will need a jack, stands, parts and a few wrenchs. When you get done with the replace you will need to get an allignment. To get to the allignment shop you should count the number of threads where you screw on the outer to the inner tierod to get you at least close. Pick up a Haynes Manual also they are very detailed and can help you out a lot.

IDK if I would buy those ones on Ebay. IMO your best bet would be to buy ones made by MOOG. Summit Racing sells them at decent prices, and they will probably last you longer.

Should I only replace the end?

How many miles are on your truck, and do you plan on keeping it for a while yet? If it were me depending on the mileage and my budget I would just buy all of the components and replace them before I got an alignment. That way everything is new, and you won't have to worry about it, but thats just what I would do.

Actually I'm gonna sell it probably over the summer. The truck has been a money put for me. I will probably buy the cheaper set and replace all the parts, since I'm not gonna keep it that long. It has 125k on it. I have reviews on that brand and surprisingly most of them say they hold up great

Are you sure the part is bad, I can't tell by looking at it. You may want to grab a hold of it and see if you can move it, or jack that side of the truck up and see how much play you have moving the tire side to side. If your steering isn't shaking, and you can't move it maybe it doesn't need changed. If you are still unsure have a reputable garage/mechanic check it for you. If the rubber cup is trashed then replace the rod.

I agree your mileage is in the area or even past replacing some of those parts, but if it was taken care of they may still be ok. Again if your not sure then have a professional check it out.

It may be just the rubber, but I think I'm gonna go ahead and replace it all while I'm down there. My steering seems a little loose, not sure if this is why, but I don't think it would hurt replacing them
