Looking to buy a Tahoe or Yukon

Hi Folks

I'm looking to buy a 2007, 2008 or 2009 Chevy Tahoe or GMC yukon.

I have seen a 2008 Tahoe hybrid for 32 000 $ witch is probably 4000 $ more than a regular Tahoe.

I have a 2007 Jeep commander limited with the hemi. Awesome truck but too small and it's a real gas guzzler....kinda real bad gasoholic !

Few questions :

- What I should expect for the gas with the 5.3 ? Would you go for the hybrid ?

- Difference between the tranny 4 or 6 speeds ?

- Reliability ?

- Anything else I should know about these truck ?

Thank you sooooo much for your inputs !!!!

Regular gas engine, about 13-14 in the city and 17-20 on flat highway

- Difference between the tranny 4 or 6 speeds ?

6-Speed is a great tranny, don't hesitate to get it. I would.

- Reliability

The Chevy/GMC models have very good reliability, better than Ford or Dodge and even Toyota according to reliability reports.

They are great vehicles. I would avoid the hybrid though at all costs. Give hybrid technology another 5-10 years to evolve for trucks. Also, you will want to get a Blackbear tune, which will improve drivibility/performance and do away with many of the nannies that GM is known for putting in their vehicles. Just make sure you get whatever vehicle you decide upon looked over by an INDEPENDENT repair shop and not trust what the dealer tells you regarding their own 25-150 point inspection.

I had a Ford Diesel Excursion that got about 16-19mpg and traded it for a 06 Commander several years ago, wow was I shocked. LOL

That little hemi Commander 4x4 was only getting 12-13 mpg.

I then went to a 07 Chevy Suburban 4x4 with the 5.3L, 4sp auto it was far better then the Hemi, it got about 15 combined driving, 16 highway only.

I then went to a 09 Expedition EL 4x4 with the 5.4L 6 speed auto that was about the same maybe 1/2 mpg better then the Suburban.

I now have a 11 Tahoe with the 5.3L and a 6 speed, and it gets abour 16 combined driving, and 17 interstate highway 75mph.

Those comanders drove real nice, just ate fuel like crazy for no bigger then it was.

If its a Hybrid for 30K it sounds like it may have a lot of miles on it, and from what I understand those battery packs are only good for so many years and so many miles, then look out for a multi thousand dollar bill for new batteries. I am not sure I would go with a high milage hybrid.

Hey, I had 2 Ford Excursion diesel !!! And the Commander sucks gas in deed !!!

The 6 speeds tranny came out in the 2009 model ?

The hybrid has 55 000 miles so at 30 000 k it's not too bad...so should I go for the hybrid or not ?

Why you guys are so reluctant about the hybrid ?

And, the expedition is better on gas that the Commander ? Really ?

Thank Guys !

Yes 6 speed came out in 09.

Actually the 6-Speed came out in 2007 for the 1/2 ton trucks. That 6-speed was jointly developed by Ford/GM believe it or not.

The 6-speed auto transmission option was only available starting with the 2009 model year in conjunction with the 5.3L engine.

When you said 1\2 ton truck, is it Tahoe 1500, Yukon and Avalanche 1500 ?

It seems that the 6 speeds will be a huge point for me....

Hybrid anyone ?

6 speeds were in the Denali versions first. The Tahoe/yukons (non denali) received them in 09

Hybrid has no advantages IMO. Less tow capacity, expensive special tires are a few reasons

Denali has the 6.2 L and probably more bad on the gas than the 5.3 L ?????

For the hybrid, I don't really need more tow capacity. I'm impress by the better MPG....

6.2 gets about the same as the 5.3 and is WAY faster!

What ? How can a 6.2 L can drink the same amout than the 5.3 L ???

And since I can afford my gasoholic Commander I guess I can afford any truck...

The 6.2 does not get the same MPG as the 5.3. If the 5.3 was way under powered for the truck then maybe so but it is not. The EPA rating shows a 3 MPG difference between the two both city and highway. Yes, we all know the EPA ratings are not real world BUT with both engines tested using the same criteria the DIFFERENCE in MPG will not be far off in real world driving with the same conditions and driver. Those that say different have convinced themselves and do actually believe it. It's classic Cognative Dissonance.

When I dont run E85 in my truck (6.2) I get about .5-1mpg worse than my 2wd Tahoe in city driving. It is a higher differential in highway driving (probably around the 3 like you state).
