Hi, my 2002 sierra is slow disengaging when in 4wd (i have a manual shift for 4wd). Also, it appears that it has a humming sound when in 4wd. Sometimes when 4wd disengages i hear a clunking sound like something may of fell off or something! I haven't checked any fluids or anything yet!

What are some things to look for?

Might this be a major repair just waiting to happen or is it one now?

The slow disengagement I can't help you with, however in the cases of humming in 4wd & clunk when disengages sound normal to me. I have the push button 4wd & mine does both of those. The humming is the front end being driven as requested & the clunk is when you turn all of that off. You could try a search for the slow disengagement & see if there is any answer out there. Good luck & happy reading!

I use to have manual shift 4x4 on my 03 silverado. What i found with it is you have to be rolling for the 4x4 to engage easier. Are you trying to lock it in 4hi or lo? if lo, you have to be in neutral for it to engage i found and usually it did make a hell of a noise going in and coming out.

I miss my manual 4x4. When you engaged it, you knew it was in and could count on it!

when the lever is shifted to 2 hi,the chain is instantly disconnected ,,at the same time power is shut off to the front diff actuator, that motor is disconnecting the spider gears at a slower rate, that doesnt matter cuz there is no input to the front diff

as said no load goin slow for all shifts and neutral goin slow for 4 lo

"slow to disengage" makes no sence to me

check your oil level, 18mm wrench

what I mean when I say "slow to disengage" is that even though I have moved the shift out of 4 Hi to 2 Hi, I still get that humming sound for could be several minutes before it clunks and disengages. Its like something sticking, no lubrication or something, this is the way that I can explain it! Thanks for your replies though! good to see that people would reply and try to help someone out if they can! Thanks!

+1 on checking fluid level (front diff & transfer case).

Don't have anymore suggestions other than what has already been posted, except hit up a dealer to have it scanned/diagnosed.

Hope you can find a fix!
