Painting Fiberglass on the cheap

I bought a used camper shell that is for the most part in really good shape, but it does have some deep scratches that go beyond the color and into, sometimes beyond, the primer. So, Im gonna try and touch up the scratches with some kind of filler, then recover the whole thing in a coat of bedliner, or change color from black to red.

I know if I change color, I will need to re-prime the whole thing. Thats not a problem. I am mainly looking for some advice on how to build the scratches back up. I dont know much about painting or primers, but isnt there some kind of thick primer that will allow me to spray it on and build the surface in a few coats? Im looking for something that I can spray on, sand after drying, and repeat until it fills the spots. Ide rather not use anything like a plastic filler, and Im looking for something that can be purchased at walmart or an auto parts store.

Im not looking for professional results, as I am not a professional. Just something a novice can do with decent results. Odds are, it will be covered in Texas pinstriping from the woods within a year anyway.

Take some penetrol to it.. Rub it on and see if it brings back the color.. Its a little trick i learned working in a paint shop. Dosent work every time but with plastics / fiberglass / boats etc.. works wonders usually

The camper is made of white fiberglass, and painted black. Will this stuff make the white fiberglass black? I dont understand.

Also, the deep scratches could be defined as chips they are so deep. There is no paint left in them, and you can feel and see a difference in the surface texture.
