ss502gmc Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction? I have a 01 2500hd 8.1/ally. I haul a 2 car trailer with it for work and its never let me down up until now. The other day I noticed a noise on the highway that sounds similar to a dust shield rubbing against a rotor when I was under a overpass that got louder throughout the day. Went home jacked truck up by rear end, started it an put in gear so tires can drive and the noise is coming my t-case. But doesnt make the noise in reverse. I know nothing about these and can not afford a new one now. Was planning on trading the truck in this month for a newer one but that cant happen with this going on and now I dont think I can drive it. ANY help would be a major help!!! Thanks in advance
Jsdirt Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Sounds like the common pump rub. The fix is here if your transfer case is one of these models: http://www.merchant-...pgrade-kit.aspx Lots of info on the net - just search pump rub & you'll be reading for hours. Edit just to say if your not mechanically inclined, you live pretty close to MA Diesel - they handle all kinds of driveline work on diesels so yours should be no problem. http://www.massdiesel.com/Services.html
ss502gmc Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 I have read all about rubbing, but all the things I have read said it didnt make any noise. Does that sound like it could be the problem still? Can I not drive it if it still has fluid? Thanks again!
Jsdirt Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Hard to say over the net. Only way to really know (if it's not leaking) is to open the case up. Sounds like you might have to do that anyway .... but remember - easy stuff first. Make sure it's not just bad front U-joints first.
gmtech4 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 internet is no good for you on weird noises ,sry ,, its not a pump rub
ss502gmc Posted March 7, 2012 Author Posted March 7, 2012 Ok, brought truck to the dealer today and found a broken tranny mount along with 2 pinholes in the rear of the t-case. No fluid obviously. They said I need a whole new unit for $2,280. Really cant afford that now, junk yards want $1500. Does anyone think that this is fixable? Maybe by replacing the common "pump rub" kits or whatever? Or is it too late? Truck drives just fine but its staying parked till something is done. Thanks again!
Jsdirt Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 If I was hurting for money, I'd RTV the pinholes & install a new tranny mount. Under $20 with tax. But that's just me. Just a suggestion. Not sure which transfer case you have. If yours matches up to the case they have, that's another option too. Anythings better than 2 grand. That's just plain ludicrous. Could make LOTS of horsepower for 2 grand .... or make an extra 2, or 4-wheeled addition to the fleet!
gmtech4 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 we used to send out the rear half for welding at the dealer and i would have to sand where the rear output bearing lives as the welding heat did something lol,it worked every time ,,GM has an updated clip for the pump or aftermarket can rape you for a new pump assy new t case ,,,,,,i dont think so unless the guts are done rear half is less expensive obviously
