Replacement Q-Jet question

I'm currently looking at replacing my stock carb with a rebuild from Summit racing.

Truck is a stock 1985 Chevy Silverado 5.0L 305 V8. Now its kind right there on the brink of where the engines were switching from all mechanical to electronic, so there is a lot of half assed computer stuff lol.

Summit Racing has this Q-Jet that is 750 CFM (is that too much?) electric choke for an automatic blah blah blah. Everything matches except idk about the CFMs ...AND...my current carb has an electronic mixture selenoid on it.....will this carb work? is this an issue bc i haven't been able to find replacements that advertise electronic mixture selenoids? or can i leave this unhooked without the computer going crazy and what not?

I'm gonna try and find the code stamp on my current carb today so i can identify what i have now.

I believe its a M4MED. 17085227 if my memory serves me right. Cruise control, electronic mixture solenoid, electric choke....

Talking to my buddy that owns a garage....he said unhooking it will most likely trip the check Eng light and disable overdrive. Also believe it will run rougher in the winter till it warms up bc there is a temp sensor in conjunction with the solenoid that helps it operate the chock better in cold conditions ....I don't see where the solenoid corresponds with the choke to do that...

Is your carb shot and cannot be rebuilt?

We have a 81 Grand Prix with the electronic mixture solenoid control carb, and it works well - but you have to set the carb adjustments on the bench exactly like the manual says.

You can't get it running and fiddle with the adjustments until it runs right. That approach just will not work,

yes that way too much carb for that motor.not sure about the mixture solenoid

x2

Try 600cfm or maybe 650cfm at the most.

I'd like to get away from the mix solenoid if possible...for the reason u can tune a standard better. I need to test my truck to see what happens when i disconnect the harness from the Carb. If nothing is effected I'm gonna get a rebuilt q-jet without the solenoid.

Man, I feel your pain. I had an 85 for about a year. The wild half computer/half carb. setup was just scary. I also had a big harness running to the distributor cap, etc. Add in those knock sensors, etc. and it's just crazy.

I had a 1986 Chevy K10 with a 305 700r4. I put in older H.E.I. Distributor, set the timing by sound of the engine, put in new set of plugs after running some Lucas fuel treatment, un-hooked all the un-needed vacuum hoses, Ran the half breed carb. no problems what so ever. Was a plow truck in Michigan. The carb. was a reman. when I purchased the truck. Idled just fine when warmed up also, and the O.D. worked.
