Cost for a new rear end?

My 05 2500hd has got 235k on her. The rear axle has a scraping noise in first gear like the ring and pinion are worn. Turing the rear yoke by hand (with the driveshaft off) there is some play. After shifting to second it goes away. What would it cost to have a shop rebuild it with new gears, bearings and seals?

Depends. Prices vary widely by region. I paid 360 to have mine regeared. That was with me providing the gears, rebuild kit, and oil. All told I think I was into it around $650. Also keep in mind the locker if you have one or want one. That would be extra to replace as well.

It's often cheaper to find a good used one then have one rebuilt,just make sure it's a good one before you buy it.
