Lug Nuts

Recently I ordered a set of snows mounted on steel wheels from the TireRack for my 2003 Sierra. The dealer installed the snows. From the dealer I ordered center caps and threaded lug nuts. I installed the center caps last night.

I used a 7/8" socket to replace the lug nuts. It felt a little loose but so did the 22 mm socket. What is the correct socket size?

And the owners manual specified that the lug nuts should be tightened to 140 ft-lbs. My other cars require something like 90 ft-lbs so the 140 number seemed high. Is it? Would the torque specification be different for the aluminum wheels?

BTW It was a b@#ch getting the lug nuts off. I sheared a Craftsman extension dohickey in the process.

I have used a 7/8" socket since new.  I have removed my tired a bunch of times (different reasons).  No problems yet.

I checked the helms manual and cant find anything definite except the wheel nuts are M14 X 1.5 (The M is for metric)

But it also states the rim is a 16x6.5 in the manual which is untrue it is a 16x7

the 140 ft.lbs. should be correct. Trucks get more of a Torque spec then cars. I dont know if it would be different for aluminum wheels or not.

Yes, Ryan suggested the 7/8 to me and it works fine.  Also, the local Firestone shop was concerned with the 140, but I told them that was the spec.  I've had them off and on once or twice myself with no problems.

I think the stock steel rims are 16x6.5 and the optional aliminum rims are 16x7.  I think the HD rims are 6.5's though for both steel and aluminum.

Shaners the helms manual has info for each type of tire (steel, chrome, and alum) they each state 16 x 6.5 which is another error i have found

Thanks for all the info. I was concerned that at 140 ft-lbs I would round-off the lug nuts with the 7/8" socket.
