Hard Starting after sitting

It started a couple weeks ago. I'll go to start the truck in the morning after it sits from driving the previous day. I always turn the key to the on position to let the fuel pressure build (force of habit). I can hear the pump whine, then I turn the key. The engine seems to stumble while trying to start. Once started it runs fine.

 

What could this be? Im guessing it could be fuel pump or pressure regulator? I dont know when they were last changed. I recently cleaned the throttle body, new gasket and nuts torqued. No codes thrown.

I had that happen on my 2k 1500, and it was the pressure regulator.

235K - fuel pump? I remember the regulator being much cheaper and easier to replace. Mechanics have some way to measure the fuel line pressure directly - there's probably some place to attach a gauge. I would get that done to identify which component's failing before throwing parts at it.

This. You can get a fuel pressure gauge at any auto parts store. Attach it to the fuel rail and see what it reads. I had a Dodge that had a bad reg once and when I would turn the key (to engage the pump) the pressure would jump up to normal and fall right back down to zero. It is supposed to hold steady at the rated pressure.

Why not check the pressure readings before you start throwing parts at it?

having the same problem... i'll start the smart way and post back my results.

 

02 z71, 5.3L, ~85k miles on it (i know, i don't drive much)

 

i'll get the pressure tested at the parts store and go from there. even at $300, that aint that expensive for a truck that's 10 years old and been paid for without any service requirements in 7 years.

Pull the vacuum line off the FPR and check for presence of fuel. If it's there replace the FPR. Watch pressure to see how fast it drops off after key off. It could be the check valve in the system, which would necessitate the fuel pump replacement

Not sure how long you plan on keeping your truck but most people will tell you to go with the OEM replacement pump. They're about $280 through Rockauto.
