My neighbor charged my a/c to 250psi on the high side. the charts show it should have been about 200 for the temperatures that day. few days later the clutch just smokes up, and starts screaming.

could the overcharge of freon caused the compressor to sieze up ? or is that a release valve and high pressure switch ?

it's a 2003 with rear air.

2003 Tahoe? Suburban?

Sounds like it needed some oil with the 134a ...

Severe overcharge would've blown relief valve.

Was there a leak before? Compressor could've been trashed already ...

GMC Yukon with Rear air. It's been leaking for years. But the leak is so small, we have been topping it off every year, or every other year. a can of stop leak solved 90% of the leak about 4 years ago. and we have been doing the top off when ever it felt weak.

Sparks were flying out of the clutch area. Stunk from high heelll

Stop leak .... uuggggh .... not good. It's going to be easier to replace the entire system than to try and flush that crap out. Once exposed to air it basically turns to cement.

The leak may have dropped the oil amount to an unsafe level ... then when you recharged the compressor seized from lack of lube. Or the compressor was fed liquid refrigerant - that's not good either - liquids don't compress.

Either way this sounds expensive.

Do you mean the pressure was at 250 when he tried to charge it, and he was charging from the high side? I would think the can pressure is now 250psi then.

You may want to check and see if the rad fans come on (if your's have them), or that the clutch fan is working properly.

Years ago I had a car come in for a fan belt, customer said it was the third belt in less than a week. Pretty simple issue, that spring they had aftermarket air installed in their car while in Florida. Once they got back to Toronto it was fine for a month or so, then it started getting warmer here. Once they got in traffic with the a/c on, the original two bladed fan (looked like a prop) could not pull enough air through condensor, high side pressure went so high the belt would just burn off. Ran water from a hose over the condensor while running brought pressures back to normal. All it really needed was a proper fan. Shop in Florida did not change it.
