6.2 Exhaust

I love, love, love the sound of my 6.2, even with the stock exhaust. Here's a question, though. Is it as "sound-tuned" as it can be?

 

I know that some folks are spending up to a thousand bucks or more for a performance exhaust. I've also read on the forum, and elsewhere, that the exhaust on the 6.2 is as performance-tuned as it can possibly be... that even adding duals doesn't add performance, etc.

 

Is there an upgrade to add even more "rumble" to it, without costing an arm and/or leg, and without sacrificing performance?

 

And yes, before you ask, I am a tightwad... and not going to spend a BUNCH of money, and certainly not going to sacrifice either performance or warranty!!!

I would consider just a muffler swap. Most prefer magnaflow, some flowmaster. I had a flowmaster super 40 on my 6.0 liter and it sounded great. Either one should cost you around two hundred bucks installed and give you a bit more rumble. With a reciprocating saw and a couple of exhaust clamps it'd run about half of that. Consider the do it yourself method and if you are happy with the sound have it welded in at a local shop...

Would ANY 3.5" in/out exhaust setup work?

 

I guess that's one question... is the factory exhaust as good as what's available in the aftermarket?

Also, what about removing the resonator? Does that do anything?

You're straying a bit from your tightwad declaration ... My current ride has the corsa sport cat back with no resonator. I'm told the resonator mellows whatever sound the muffler produces and eliminates the downshift cackle(sp?) that, well, downshifts can produce. I believe my exhaust is 3" and handles the added boost and hp produced by a supercharger. 3.5" may be necessary for a bunch of mods, but in your case may be overkill. You need at least some measure of back pressure to keep your low end torque and power.

Ah, but the 6.2 comes from the factory with the 3.5" exhaust all the way back! (right?)

 

And by the way, not straying... my previous post should have said 3.5" in/out MUFFLER, not exhaust. (Sorry!)

I have the magnaflow #12909 on my 6.2 which is 3.5" and stock size on all 6.2's is 3.5". You will need some modification to make it line up properly however. It's a hell of alot cheaper than buying a catback.

Backpressure is a myth and you DON'T Want it. What you want is exhaust velocity and 3" is actually restrictive on these motors esp...boosted.

It sounds great becuz I have headers and the resonator is still on. I didn't want it to sound raspy. Ill post some pictures later.

I cannot find an exhaust shop around me that can do anything with 3.5 inch piping. I have a spintech that I want to put in place of the stock muffler. Everyone tells me they cant do it.

What is their reason for not being able to do it? Sounds like a bunch of incompetent shops IMO.....Heck, If you were close by I would do it for you in my garage, with your help and a few beers of course. It shouldn't take much to order a few pieces of exhaust piping to make that work.

My buddy has a corsa touring muffler that came off his wifes tahoe. I was thinging about putting it on my 6.2 but the muffler itself is only 3 inch inlet and outlet. Any feedback on if that will restrict the airflow enough to make it not worth doing? i plan on keeping the stock tailpipe

+1 on the backpressure myth. The best performance muffler is no muffler at all.
