Sierra 2500HD 8.1L

I was looking at a 2002 GMC Sierra with an 8.1L in it and it interested me. Never really knew they made an 8.1L. Now im thinking about seeing if i can get a loan and buy it. Question is, how reliable and good of engine is this? Any info or experiences with this engine would be great. Here is the link to the truck im looking at. Let me know what you think.

WOW thats a beast of a truck!! I had an 02 Silverado 2500HD with the 8.1 and it was a powerhouse to say the least, matched up to the Allison tranny they made a great team.

The engine is a beast as stated; the only problems that I know of was the crank position sensor going bad.

You are right I did have the crank sensor replaced on mine. On 2 occasions while driving the truck would just shut off like you turned the key, I'd let it set for a few minutes and it would fire back up like a new one. I took it to the dealer and had them replace it, they wanted to hook it up to the computer and check everything out ($$$$$) but I told them to just replace the sensor, they did an never another problem. I did my homework on the forums and knew thats what it was.

Nice truck, if it was me I'd want stock height though. The 8.1s are sick, with some mods you can get a ton of power. One set of tires and a years worth of gas for that thing, though, would make any sane person want to sell it

My guess would be less than 10 mpg, with a tailwind.

So how is these motors compared to a diesel. Not so much in how it tows but its reliability? Im trying to decide between an 8.1 gasser or a diesel. Im moving on from that big blue truck and im tossed between a silverado 8.1 and a sierra diesel. They are about 6000 dollars apart in price with the 8.1 obviously cheaper.

Really how reliable are the 8.1 engines if taken care of? im enamored by them for some damn reason

The,8.1,s,get,knocked,for,there,MPG,S...But,you,dont,buy,a,3/4,ton,truck,with,a,big,block,to,get,groceries...

Im,not,knocking,d-max,at,all....its,just,$,VS,$...And,cost,of,repair...get,an,lb7,dmax...

And,see,what,it,costs,to,do,the,injectors,when,they,go,bad!!

I wouldn't knock the 8.1 for MPGs... All my family owns are trucks and we dont expect great MPGs. But if your looking to do work, a diesel gives you the towing and the MPGs dont fall through the floor while doing so.

If only, GMC/Chevy would make a full size diesel suv....

Send me some info. And I'll look up that thread. I am leaning toward an 8.1 for one cause they seem bad ass and because I just can't find many diesel's in my price range.
