Is there a big performance difference between the different octanes with the BB Tune?

I think the reason they are suggesting 89 is due to quality of fuel. It appears that in the states you can get varying quality of fuel. I know when Justin did mine, he mentioned that the reg fuel I was using was "good" fuel. If you are running good fuel (tier one maybe?), you will be good to go with what manual says.

That being said, I had the tune on mine done for 89 octane. I think I may just ask him for a premium tune and see what happens.

 

BTW, the major change in BB tune is in the general drivability of the vehicle. You really do not know how bad it is until it is tuned. Especially the trans part of the tune.

I use E85 for my tune and I can tell the difference even if I'm not close to a station that sells E85 and I have to throw premium in it. The engine definitely screams a little more off E85. I also turned AFM off. Pretty happy with it. My transmission does shift a little odd now at times. Still not sure what the deal is with that...hoping long term having the shift points adjusted/firmness doesn't destroy the tranny.

Some engines should be using 89+ octane, even on stock tuning. But rule of thumb, if you have good quality higher octane fuel you will see better results.

I've used Shell, Chevron, Texaco and Exxon 87 octane with my BB tune and had no issues. I don't find the need to run 93 octane and use the other tune, unless I'm driving the new Camaro. Since I'm in Texas I think the gas we get here is pretty good.

I ran 87 on my truck until i got it tuned. Then after changed mine to run off 92 and 89. My dad had my truck for a week or so for something, and he put in regular fuel (87). When i got i back i couldn't understand why it felt so sluggish, then i asked him what gas he put in it. I put 89 back in it the next time and it was back to normal. Summary: I could tell a huge difference in the gas i put in it.
