4l60e.. what sun shell? What shift kit? What rebuild kit?

I had a previous post about our 4l60e in the tahoe..cant find it.

Im finally getting around to getting it fixed, Im gonna have a good local shop do it, He said he would do the complete job, including the corvette servo, a shift kit if i want, and add a better cooler, and flush. 2 yr warranty for $1850 total "start to finish' So im going that route.

My question is what sun shell should i get? I didnt realize there were different ones, Im going to put the corvette servo in and i figured a b&m cooler. But what rebuild kit do you guys think is the best..Or what have you used? I was also going to go with a deeper pan (3-4 qaurts) does the corvette servo help with anything other than cleaner shifts? What does the sun shell do exactly? And what would it help going with a better one VS the standard hardened one?

Is there any other upgrades or tricks i can do?

The corvette servo is for firmer/more positive 2nd gear shifts. The updated sun shell will be fine for not stripping out. Use a Kevlar band to go with the corvette servo. Rebuild kits are all about the same, let your rebuilder use what he normally uses. Have him increase the pressure regulator for overall increased/firmer shifts. That should be sufficient for your needs. This all coming from 20 years experience in custom transmission rebuilding.

That should cover it. Unless you're wanting shifts that are so hard they wear out other parts or cause breakage.

You can request Borg Warner clutches - my personal preference for GM rebuilds with mods.

I had a Monster Transmission "Beast" sunshell put in mine. It is supposed to be better than the factory welded ones because its thicker and is a solid forged piece rather than welded. I also had a Transgo shift kit, new valvebody, new steel valves to replace the plastic ones, and a heavier converter. Im not sure what kind of clutches I ended up with. Cost me $1850 out the door with unlimited miles and a 1 year warranty.

you could through a 5 pinion planetary out of a 4l65e to replace the 4 pinion planetary that is stock in yours.

Can you please make me a list of the items that are important, and what kind of each That you reccomend.. We plan on having this tahoe for a while

and would like it strong and reliable,, And able to shift better and put \up with a little xtra pwr put to it..

Take a look at the specs on builds from companies like http://www.finishlinetrans.com/transmissions/streetPerformance4L60.htm. They list a lot of what they consider to be "improvements". The one GM transmission guy I've spoken with (dealer tech doing GM transmissions for 25 years) preferred using the latest GM components and keeping it "stock". He showed me some clutch packs, etc. from a 4L60 w/ ~150k miles, and they looked new. The failure was a single component (don't remember what), and that's often the case. If/when I'm faced with this, I'll either use GM components (or equivalent/better), *or* I'll buy a "built" unit from a reputable shop that does only that type of work. They're the most likely to know what does/doesn't work w/ non-stock mods, imho. There seems to be so many ways to mess up a perfectly good unit (springs/pistons/valves/bands/clutches/gears/etc).

I you can afford to upgrade to 4l65e specs with a corvette servo you'd be golden with your truck. but as the previous poster said just bring it up to current upgrades with a good master rebuild kit and it will last you for a long time.
