Somewhat eliminated TM on 8.1

I got some time to use a Tech 2 Saturday and do some playing with it.  :smash:

I got into one table, "% of DC".  Mine was set at minimum = 0% and Maximum = 91%.  So I zero'd out the Maximum number and let it download to my PCM, however after about an hour, the thing was still downloading to the PCM and the technician needed the Tech 2 back so I just hit "done" on the prompt menu and let it be.

The way home was quite the trip.  First my T.A.P. was trying to relearn it's shift and disconnect points.  When I'd come to a stop, the transmission would disconnect with a thud.  After a few lights this went away but ohhh the fun I had.  :eek:

Before hand I could light them up from a dead stop.  Saturday night, I'd be rolling at 15 mph and drop the hammer and the truck was sideways and the one time I kept it straight, I left two black strips about a block long.  :cheers:  From 1st to 2nd, no TM!!!  Yeeehaaa.  From 2nd to 3rd, no TM!!!  Yeeehaaaa.  From 3rd to 4th?  D*MN TM!!!  This must've been where it was at when I hit "done"  I wonder if it also affected my shift rpm as it wound a up to nearly redline before shifting.  Before hand it'd get no where near redline before shifting which annoyed the f*ck outta me.

Oh well, when I get more time with a Tech 2, I'll continue to futz with it.  For now, I thought I'd just post my results.

since you were able to get rid of torque management for the allison using the tech 2, is there any way to use the tech 2 to change programming for bigger size tires??

thanks :smash:

I think I will let YOU play with that before I get into it! See if something dasterdly happens with yours 1st, then I know I wont do that too! Keep me posted though on how things work out. Make sure you pull a trailer too! See how it pulls going up hills and a headwind too.K?

CMNTMXR81, Will this work on the 4l85e also? If so Im sure I could get some time in on the tech2 at my local dealership because I know everyone there. But I have never used one before, Is it hard to use? I already have the superchips and that got rid of some TM but I want it all gone. If you could steer me in the right direction I would appreaciate it.

To answer your questions;

Yes and no.  Yes you can change tires sizes.  But only to sizes that the vehicle came with as standard equipment and as optional equipment.  For instance, 245/75/16 was my stock size and it was the biggest tire available on an HD.  I can not program with a Tech 2 for the 285/75/16's I currently have on as it was not an optional size.  So then it's "no."

No problem!  I like blowing things up.  :flag:  Actually, Sunday I ended up pulling a friends Bravada (with a Typhoon engine and running gear in it) as it's fuel pump died.  Bravada's (from the one I owned, weigh about 4,500lbs plus my trailer at about 1,500lbs for a total of 6,000lbs is by far NOT the heaviest I've towed, but still not a light trailer.  It pulled it with no problems.  The guy who owns it works at Navistar (I.E. Powerstroke plant) and his loaner from the company was nothing other than an F-250SD with Powerstroke.  While we were pulling onto the expressway and accelerated, I easily passed him.  Not that we were full throttle racing or anything.  He even admitted when we got to the place we were taking his BraPhoon that the Big Block moves pretty well.  :P

When you plug it in, you'll select through your engine and transmission setup and it'll take you into the menus pertaining to your transmission.  Since I have the Allison, I immediately selected "5 speed automatic" so I didn't go in and see what was available for the "4 Speed Automatic" or "6 Speed Manual" which were the other two choices.  If you go into the High performance section, I detailed my footsteps of how I got into it.  The Tech2 is pretty user friendly to use and bet it's a lot easier to use than the Superchips tuner as it has a full 4" monitor (like a laptop) and will pretty much prompt you through stuff with a menu at the bottom of the screen which line up with the "soft keys" (the buttons under the screen).

The hardest part will be figuring out what you've got access to.

You are the pioneer, CMNTMXR81, keep up the great work!!  My brother is in the market for a new truck as his '99 Z71 is about used up.  I'm trying to talk him into an HD, either an 8.1 or a Duramax..  I take it you like the 8.1?  :flag:

    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
    • Back in the day people would buy cars based on performance. The charger posted does 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. And it’s fully loaded.  It has a decent warranty and will fit most anyone’s needs. Remember the original Hemi? 90 day warranty. 25K mini truck or that car? I’d go with the car. It wouldn’t fit my perimeter. If I could just talk my wife out of her Genesis. It would be perfect for her.
    • Let's pivot this back. Someone said they wanted pictures.   Even better, there's already video. Pre-prod prototypes are already on the road and they're letting the press drive them.   JerryRigEverything did a good review. I really enjoy his content and EV adventures, so I was thrilled when he had the chance to review a Slate:
    • The Charger EV was stillborn. Wrong car at the wrong price for Dodge's intended audience. Now at a good price with fire-sale discounts, and still not selling, it's still very much the wrong car. Again, Dodge's intended audience. I believe a lot of Stellantis' EV blunders were all under Tavares' regime at Stellantis...the board convinced him to move on. Neat car, just wasn't received on the level that would sustain mass production.   Dodge is headed in a better direction for its core business. I didn't think there was anything left to get excited about re: the Durango after its 15 year run, but they're just now releasing a 392 version that should price out in the low 40's. Nicely done. I'm not sure I would touch anything Stellantis makes with a 10' pole these days, but the Durango is still mostly parts designed like 3 parent companies ago so maybe it's still OK?
