New TPMs

My 20” OEM wheels just came in and I ordered them with new Factory GM TPMs. The tires should be in on Tuesday and I will be mounting them on my 2010 Sierra 1500. How do I deal with the new TPMs? Will I need to take it to the dealer or is it something that I can do at home if they need to be reprogrammed?

Maybe you will need the TPMS activation tool or take to the dealer, maybe not. In 2011, they changed so the "let the air out" sync method is not supposed to work. However, I found that by airing the tires up to 40 psi, let the truck (and the old tires/wheels if the are still in the area) set for 30 minutes or so then run the air out sync method, I am able to sync mine. I have to let air out for what seems like a long time and thinking it won't work but it does - for me.

 

Note: I have set of aftermarket TPMS sensors in my winter wheels and they seem to sync a lot faster/easier - might be my imagination.

Take your vehicle after the tire and rim installation to any "Discount Tire", they will perform the scan for free (at least mine did). It took less than 5 minuets with their scan tool, they put the vehicle into "learn mode", pointed the scan tool from the TPMS sensor to the middle of the vehicle, heard a "chirp", and they moved on to the next tire. They started on the L/H front, and moved around the vehicle.
