2010 Silverado 6.2 Transmission temp

hi ive recently purchased a 2010 silverado used from an optimum dealer, ive always had gm trucks and they have been good.

 

Anyway i was always told back with my old 8.1's and duramax's something like 95 degrees celcius is approx where it should be at while towing in the summer.

 

I want to know what you guys think of my temps and if i should be taking it in.

 

Today its -5 celcius and snow everywhere, i was just doing some city driving, and i wasnt driving hard but not exactly babying it either, the trans temp read 93 degrees celcius.

I noticed 117 today while driving in town. It was 20 degs out

Mine stays at 210°F (99°C) whether it's 90°F (32°C) or -10°F (-23°C) outside. Only time I ever saw it go past 210° was towing over 6k lbs. up a 10% grade for a few miles when the ambient temperature was 95°F. On those cold mornings it just takes much longer to get to temperature than in the summer, but the peak temp. never changes.

 

When the truck was still breaking in, it used to hit 210° in less than 2 miles in the winter. Now 5 years & 54k miles later, it takes close to 6 miles.

Keep in mind that the majority of heat is generated by the torque converter when not locked up. When driving around the city the torque converter will not be in lockup up mode as much as it is in unlocked mode. What temps do you see when on the highway for long periods of time? Your truck should have an external trans cooler on it I would think. Does it still have one? You bought the truck used, don't just assume the cooler is still there. The cooler should be not much cooler than the oil temp as well, if you can reach it, see if it is hot to the touch to ensure it is actually still in the system.

Personally, i don't think the temp is all that bad considering the conditions you are driving in. If the trans fluid goes through the engine rad as well, the temps between the trans and engine will not be very far apart. I would expect trans temps to be at least equal to engine temp when engine radiator is used to cool trans fluid.
