parking brake pedal

i have a 2001 1500hd. my parking brake works perfectly and holds the truck on an incline. my son decided to move my truck and mashed the parking brake pedal all the way to the floor. now when you pull on the release lever the pedal does not pop back up. i looked under the dash and can see the cable pulling on the release mechanism when i pull the brake release but the pedal does not move. The brake light in the dash goes off when i manually pull the pedal up to the no-brake position. does ayone have a diagram or can tell me what couls possibly be broken. i do tow sometimes so woul;d like this brake to be funtional. right now even with the pedal depressed and the dash brake light on, it doesn't feel like the parking brake is engaged.

Sounds like something in the emergency system broke, you can actually follow the lines from.the driver side of the cab and look for loose lines, if everything looks good, you might have a bigger problem. You have drums or rotors in the back?

Sounds like a parted cable or linkage piece somewhere between the pedal and the rear brakes. As mentioned above trace down the drivers side frame rail while someone actuates the pedal and have looksee.

thanks guys. it was too cold to be on the ground last night, so i brought it in the garage today and the cable snapped right where it connects to the 2 cables going to each wheel. Guess i'm now shopping for new cable. thanks for the help..

Man, my dad did that to my truck. Folks used to driving old vehicles with real stiff parking brake pedals. Mine didn't break, but when I released it it sounded like a cannon going off it snapped back so hard.

That's why I like the newer "push-to-release" type pedal; no sudden, loud, unexpected noises assaulting my old nervous system.

I usually just put my foot on the pedal as I release it to prevent the dramatic pop up!

Hey all,

I know this is an old thread, but since it's related, I figured I'd see if anyone would might see this and be able to help. I have the same problem as the original author. Brake will apply, but has to be pulled up manually while pulling the release lever. I checked the lower cables, and everything seems to be in order (besides the rear cables are less than a year old). So I pulled out the pedal assembly, and it looks like my spring for the pedal release popped off the pin, can't finagle it back into place so I have a replacement pedal assembly on order. Here's the problem:

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the front cable out of the assembly. Any ideas? I am so pissed that I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks for the help.

Nevermind, I was as dumb as I thought I was, figured it out, right after I posted.

    • Good question, I don't remember for sure but I believe it was the HD. I will check and get back to you.

    • Probably a one and done post, but do you have a CEL on the dash? Was having issues with my transmission, fortunately only a week, and it turned out to be the transmission harness. Valve body was in good shape, so new harness with all the sensors attached, new fluid, and filter. Seems to have worked so far?
    • Two interesting tidbits of information which are NOT related were just released.   One, regarding the possible thrust bearing issues / engine failures with the 3.0. Demonworks just did a segment in which they believe they may have found "a" or "the" cause of thrust bearing failures: A missing thrust bearing. If the engine doesn't have all its thrust bearings from the factory, the missing bearing can cause extra play which ends up destroying a nearby thrust bearing which then sends metal through the engine.       Of other importance, Lake Speed Jr released some interest information regarding oil weight selection for the 3.0. Comparisons of:   AcDelco 0w20 Dexos D Mobil 1 ESP x2 0w20 Dexos D Mobil 1 ESP x2 0w30 Mobil 1 ESP x4 0w40. Mobil Delvac 5w40   Spoiler alert: The Mobils are PAO Ester -base and the ACDelco is a Group III base. Mobil shows lower wear in their tests for similar weights. Additive packages between 20-30-40 weight ESP's appear to be the same, but only 0w20 is Dexos D licensed. Wear is even more reduced with 30 and 40 weight ESP although all perform very well and resist shear and provide very similar viscosities within temperature operating ranges in the 3.0.   There are even more surprises, so just go watch it.
    • Hello Guys I'm new to the form,         I just put a 7-inch Rough Country lift on my 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 and I also put a Borla exhaust on it. But I noticed when I'm in park or in neutral and then I rev my truck up really quick there is a bad click noise and I think it's coming from the motor somewhere. Anyways I got a video of it I will attach below I was just wondering if you guys think its rod knock or lifter tick or something like that because I know the AFM kind of made the lifters weak on these trucks.       Thanks!!!!!
