Would you tow this?

I would add one of the hellwig helper kits to add another 25-3500 lbs of capacity, Wih that 6 spped I would have nothing less then 4:10 gears..Thats going to make the biggest difference in the world pulling that with a horse in it!.. Just because i piece of paper says a truck can do something doesnt mean its the best idea..8-9000 lbs is alot on a half ton in my opinion, my 8.1 with 400 HP and over 500 ft lbs feels that much weight..

I think the one question that has been missed is "How far and how often?" From what I have read you will be right at your towing limits for the truck so yes it will tow it, but you are going to find towing any distance or hilly terain is going to be work, not just for the truck but for you as well. To keep highway speeds without the transmission hunting for gears you will have to keep it out of overdrive, this means higher engine speeds and more cabin noise. Even then you will likely find it downshifting fairly often. I tow two boats back and forth from MD to FL, 1200 miles oneway, every year. The larger of the two is an 8k load. I used to tow with a Yukon XL and at the end of the day you would be exhausted. Now doing the same drive in a 2500 is a whole new game, you really can forget the trailer is back there.

 

So it really is more of a question than simply "can I tow it" The answer to that of course is Yes.

The 5.3/6 speed combo didn't come with 4.10's I don't even think it came with 3.73's

Mine has the 4.10 gears-it's listed right on the sticker. It has the 20" (275/55/20) wheels if that makes a difference. It has the "trailering pkg".

From the factory you couldn't get a 5.3/6 speed with anything lower than a 3.42. To get down into 4.10's in a 1500 you would have to have a 4 speed and possibly a 6.0

My travel trailer weighs in at 7500 lbs. loaded up, 840 lbs on the tongue. I would suggest not towing the set-up your looking at. I got rid of my 1/2 ton (same as yours) that was well within the limits to tow that trailer, once you get into any mountains you realize the truck is too small, I traded mine in for a 3/4 ton diesel. I don't need the diesel for what I tow and how often I tow, but I just didn't want to ever feel like the truck was over whelmed.

If it's not a very long haul and the horses aren't 1200plus lbs each you would likely be okay. However if it is a long haul I would not do it. I haul a 6700 lbs camper dry so it's likely 7500 to. 8000 loaded upand I do it just fine.

Is this thing a gooseneck or a bumper pull? If it is a gooseneck, I wouldnt pull it with any truck that has a bed shorter than 6'. If its a bumper pull, Ide be cautious and maybe add some helpers or airbags, and possibly regear.

Helper kits don't add capacity, they warn you not to exceed the mfg. capacity, they only allow you to carry the weight more comfortably.
