Broken Torsion Bolt

Recommended Posts

Posted

I did a dumb thing and listened to people at school, got under the truck one day and attempted to crank the torsion bars up. 1 of the 2 bolts snapped flush i got a new bolt from my local GM dealership but im not sure as how to repair it. Can anyone help? Also i got an alignment shortly after thinking they would repair it, unfortunately they did not. My tires are wearing really awkwardly and my steering is extremely loose at high speeds.

I need an idea as to where to start with the bolts and bar adjustment, or the alignment, and if i can do it myself also the cost of repair would be helpful so i know what im in for.

DONT YOU DARE AND TRY THIS REPAIR !!!!

there is a special C-clamp for this job,

IF YOU USE JUST ANY C- CLAMP ,IT CAN BREAK AND *****KING KILL YOU !!!!

so take it in and pay the man ,,,

PS ,dont mess with your t bars again, you did it wrong ,,,very wrong

you are in for a straight time repair ,the tech will use the c- clamp to take the key off the adjuster bolt you broke ,he should cut the bolt that is on the other side of the block and remove the block and install a new one and a new bolt ,the block may be able to be turned sideways and down but i doubt it ,

did you raise your truck first or just sitting on the ground ??

I was trying to level the front of the truck... it was just sitting on the ground :( ugh im an idiot lol. Would this explain my uneven tire wear and loose steering on the highway?

no,your steering needs an inspection by a tech ,,with a ticket in his pocket

you tried to adjust the t bars when they were LOADED ,,no wonder it broke

J-36202 is the special tool number

if you are taking it to a corner garage (non dealer) make SURE they have that tool for the safety of the tech ,

all dealers have this tool

Shouldn't break if you lift the front end off the ground when you crank it. Has been done many many times by many people, myself included.

Usually you can borrow the torsion bar tool from one of the parts places too, but you'll still need to lift the front end and do the rest the way govtech said. Uneven tire wear and loose steering means something other than the torsion bar misalignment. Get the front end lifted and start inspecting. Pull all directions on the wheels and see where there is play. Could be a bad ball joint, but I'm leaning more toward a bad tie rod, most likely inner with your description of loose steering. Check for blown seals and boots and look for leaks at your steering rack.
