I heard at school from some guys if you leave water exposed for 24 hours it becomes distilled. Is this true, do you know?

want to double check before I stick it in a radiator, if it really matters much

I think thats wrong. If the container is left open the chlorine will gas off but all the other minerals will still be present. Just my opinion but I think thats the way it is.

I agree, that would be wrong.

The only way to get distilled water would be to boil it, and collect the steam, letting it turn back to "distilled" water.

Nonstop is right.

Water that sets out will retain all of it's non-volatile substances.  Elements which vaporize at room temperature, such as chlorine or flourine, will slowly evaporate out.  Things like iron, calcium and other salts will stay in the water.

If you boil water, catch the steam in a distillation tube and allow it recondense in another container you will have distilled water.  The foriegn substances that don't vaporize will be left behind in the original container and it usually looks like white film or powder.

I learned that in one of the 7 sememsters of college chemistry I was required to take and seen it put to practical use in ways I probably shouldn't go into here.  :)

Especially SALT...  In my area, there is a high concentration of salts in the water.

One really doesn't want this as part of the coolant.
