Replaced caliper, bled brakes and still no pedal pressure

So I replaced my front left caliper today and bled the brakes twice.
There were no air bubbles what so ever so I'm sure that I got all the
air out of the system. I used a pressure bleeder.

I went to test drive it and still have no pedal pressure. With the truck
off I could pump the brakes 3 or 4 times and they would be solid as a
rock and hold. When I would drive I could pump the brakes and about the
3rd pump it would return to normal pedal pressure and hold until I
stopped. Once I let off the brakes to accelerate and brake again, there
would be no pressure.

I checked all lines and the master cylinder and there are no leaks
anywhere. When I pressure bled, I used 10 psi and it held there all day
long.

What else could be the problem?

I'm taking it Monday to the dealer so they can bleed the ABS system and
fully flush the lines. When I changed my brakes two weeks ago and had to compress the calipers back in, could I have introduced air into the ABS system?

I did the following tests to make sure I was getting a vacuum.

 

Test for a system vacuum leak as described below:

  • Operate the engine at idle without touching the brake
    pedal for at least one minute.
  • Turn off the engine, and wait one minute.
  • Test for the presence of assist vacuum by depressing the
    brake pedal and releasing it several times. Light application will produce less and
    less pedal travel, if vacuum is present. If there is no vacuum, air is leaking into
    the system somewhere.

Test for system operation as follows:

  • Pump the brake pedal (with engine off) until the supply
    vacuum is entirely gone.
  • Put a light, steady pressure on the pedal.
  • Start the engine, and operate it at idle. If the
    system is operating, the brake pedal should fall toward the floor if constant pressure is
    maintained on the pedal.

As I also said, when I was using the pressure bleeder, it would hold the 10 psi the whole time and wouldn't drop. There was a slight leak at the cap since it wouldn't seal properly but that was it.

I did. Right Rear > Left Rear > Right Front > Left Front (the one I replaced).

 

I bleed them twice. Once by myself and the second time I had the wife watch and make sure nothing went dry and the pressure never dropped.

Well went out to the truck this morning and there is a very small leak where the master cylinder bolts to the vacuum booster. I'm guessing the master cylinder is bad? Do I need to replace the whole thing or can I just replace the seal?

It was a simple bleeding process which was easy and worked fine. It's the master cylinder that is bad which was either bad before or I cause it to go back because the pedal would go to the floor.

 

I'm was looking to see if anybody else agreed that the master cylinder is bad. It's probably leaking just enough to where I don't have break pressure when using the pedal but enough of a seal that it did not affect the bleeding process.

You bled in the reverse order, but I dont think that would cause what you are experiencing. You are supposed to bleed closest to the master cylinder first so, LF, RF, LR, RR.

    • I know; crap pictures.   Anyway, as a finale of sorts to this thread, I had replaced both differential covers and since they had the capability of adding temperature probes, I did that. These are MaxTow analog/digital gauges with stepper motors. They'll flutter around like crazy for a moment and start at a nominal 100 degrees Fahrenheit.   I drove a 30-mile loop to the grocery store, averaging 70 MPH (as much as 80 to see if there was a quick spike in temperature. The air temperature is 102 (ambient ?). but the first pic is 7 miles into the trip. The second is getting back into the truck after leaving the store; differential temperatures dropped about three to four degrees in 15 minutes. The third pic in on the road to my house, about a mile away.   In that run, I saw a high of 150F on the rear differential, and 121F on the front. I'm sure a longer drive or towing will see higher than that, and when that happens, I can update the observations.

    • Fully warm, coolant temp >194, closed loop.   Run time can be anywhere from just reached operating temperature to having driven 30+ miles.   The O2 chart (which is a feature I just discovered after reading) for the bad idle seems to be "most" of the time. For the little time I've been watching it (scanning and driving! watchout!) I can't seem to isolate any cause or condition yet.   It definitely idles rougher sometimes than others and so far what I've seen is the rougher idles are always rich. But not enough to set a CEL.   In other news I replaced the starter solenoid. Everything on this truck is such a PITA. Starter "snout" is mangled up with the torque converter inspection cover which is tangled up with hard cooling lines and the driveshaft. But I got 'er done without too much swearing...I just go into everything now knowing it's going to be a frustrating mess.   The starter solenoid replacement kicks off the next round of work: AC, injector rebuild, cat, exhaust. I'm just going to do it all. But first:   I don't know what my fuel pressures are. I can't definitively say the issue is the injector without first verifying fuel pressures and any leakdown. I "rented" a test kit ($199.99 at O'Really's ...intentional misspelling). They don't "rent" tools anymore, they charge you for the tool and then you return it when you're done. No joke. It is listed as a rental on the receipt but the guy told me there's no difference between renting and buying  now, you just return it when you're done and they refund the credit card. Mmmkay, whatever.   I will rule out fuel pressure issues (too much), and any leaking (that's how I'll know the problem is inside the intake). I think someone said the return line could be plugged or not flowing and that could cause high fuel pressure (and too much fuel being pushed through injectors). I'll cross that bridge if I get high readings.   As of now I'm ready to tear off the intake cover, extract the injector, and have it sent off to be rebuilt just so I can rule that out.
    • What are the conditions of this rich idle? Warm or cold engine? Run time? Does every idle look like this or only sometimes?
