budget upgrades that you can and should do

haven't posted on here for years holy crap. im on here again because we recently bought ourselves a 4600lb 5th wheel 2 months ago and was looking for tips on towing and power upgrades. after a 1000kms trip with the 5th wheel I knew the old girl needed some help towing it. came across the corvette servo upgrade for the 4l60e. for 30$ cdn that is a great upgrade, hardest part was taking off the heat shield bolts. nice firm /quick shift between 2-3 now can even chirp tires at wot when it shifts. better acceleration from a stop towing the 5th wheel too the quicker shifts helps keep the truck in power band. next up I installed the superior 4th gear hold billet servo last week, roughly $100 cdn for that one. have not towed with it yet but its more for unloaded driving anyways. now when I am coming down hills and I manually put the shifter into 3rd the truck actually slows down(before the revs just came up but the speed stayed the same) also 3rd to 4th gear shifts are really smooth now and while im in 4th the truck can climb small inclines without down shifting. I was trying to use my works snap on soulus scanner to adjust timing but can not with that model, but I did do a ckp relearn functional test. warm truck up truck, revs it to 5000rpm and the scanner resets everything? my truck instantly idles smoother then ever before and sounds different? don't really know what happened but it runs great after that. cost = $0 a shop will probably do it for $20? up next im going to side gap and index a set on ngk v power copper plugs cost=$20 and looking into some ls-1 efans and black bear tune. im hoping after all that the truck will tow the 5ver just right.

Where did you get the fourth gear billet servo from and any problems with install?

It is actually a 2-4 servo,

I had a "Superior" race grade billet servo installed (externally) on Sara (2001 Z28).

Back in 2001 they were very common to find in the aftermarket, now I guess it would be a salvage yard.

google superior servo k034

I found mine on ebay or get both from Oregonperformance.com

no problems but I recommend doing both the corvette servo and the superior at the same time, less atf loss, less hassle with the snap ring, saves time, etc.

side gapped and indexed the ngk v powers today. looking at the ngk g powers I took out and 6 out of 8 were getting spark are a good angle the other 2 the ground electrode was blocking it. you can see the brown flash mark on the porcelain. the old plugs had around 50,000kms on them

some tips,

buy 4 extra plugs because you will not luck out and get the first 8 to line up where you want them too.

I marked the old plugs before I took them out at the 12 o clock position so I could match up the new plugs best I could without having to thread in and out multiple times. work pretty good.

if your going to cut down the ground electrode, use a dremal nothing else works near as good and leave almost no burrs that have to be removed.

use safety glasses, the thin cutting discs are brittle.

set the gap bigger then needed , gives you more room for safely cutting the ground electrode and not hitting centre electrode, of course regap after.

I will see how they drive and idle and post later.

400kms on my mods and decided to fill up because were going camping this weekend, I track my economy on fuelly.com so I checked last years vs this years same month. 14.3l per 100k last year and I got 13.8 now. I'm pretty happy with that because I have been doing some wot runs to check the shifting out. I believe that the servos are getting more power to the ground so the engine is not working as hard? the truck still idles great

just an update, truck is still running super smooth and strong with the indexed plugs and trans servos.

started thinking about a l33 swap though, found one for $1200(80k miles) plus they don't want my old engine back so I think I could sell it for 500 or so
