Ok i dont know how many of you remember this but here goes

bought my dell laptop 11/01.  Feb. 7, 2002 the keyboard went out.  had to send it in to be fix (with refurbished parts).  Computer was 2 1/2 months old.  Well today (less than 15 months old now) the keyboard goes out once again.  Doesnt this sound funny?  Well i call dell and before i even say anything the lady is like we cannot help you you are out of warranty.  Ok let me talk to your manager.  We argued and basically i am screwed.  My thing is its kinda funny how the keyboard has went out twice and they wont even talk to me but they will take my $$$ to fix it.

Screw DELL i will never buy their computers again (my gateway lasted 4 yrs).

Their customer service isnt what they state either

So  for now i have my gateway keyboard hooked up to my

laptop.

This makes me wanna    :(  :P IT

I hear, ya, well, at least my brother does, he bought an "atlas" and it just crashed, 1 1/2 years old. this "CyberMax"(company went bankrupt a week after I got it delivered, literally, so I NEVER had a warranty) is almost three years old, and all I have had to do is reinstall windows 3 times(just to freshen up the drivers, not a complete format/reinstall).

for another thing, my 700 Athlon(384 SDRAM, from 128) has ALWAYS outperformed his 256 MB DDR equipped 1.2 T-bird Athlon in most stuff, which we STILL can't figure out, even when all back ground stuff is closed.

His modem is also junk, he could never get above 27.7 with his current provider, I get 53 with the same company. We ought to make a list of good & bad computers, so everyone will know.

I would put cybermax, but they are bankrupt, so I just add bad:

BAD:

Atlas

Compaq(word of mouth, don't know personally)

I don't know what model of Dell you have, but in my previous job we used Dell laptops exclusively in some of the worst conditions for computers.  They were our main PC in the office, and then they were bagged up and traveled with us to the job sites.  As long as they didn't get very wet, they took a lickin' but kept on tickin'.  Coast to coast, humid and dry air, dusty and clean areas...no problems.

I have a Dell desktop at home and it has been nothing but dependable for the past 3 yrs.  I know that if I have a problem it's out of warranty and I'm on my own, but unlike a laptop is much easier to fix and typically cheaper.

Laptops can be a bugger if they go bad.  $$$$

Your situation sounds a lot like a CD player I had.  With less than one month left of warranty it went haywire so I took it back to BEST BUY.  They wouldn't exchange it but offered to fix it.  Fine.  I got it back and a few weeks after the warranty was up it started doing the same thing as it did before.  They wouldn't do anything about it except tell me how much it would cost to fix it even though they unsuccessfully repaired it under warranty.  I wasn't happy.

If I ever run into that guy that says "dude, your getting a dell!", I'm gonna say "Dude, Dell sucks!" and kick him in the balls for ya Ryan.

(Well, not ONLY for you, but for a couple hundred others out there)

Funny how i have the 2500 series laptop (only been taken out of my house 2 times) and the disontinued it shortly after i bought mine.   ??? Did they have problems with it?

I will get the last laugh.  I was looking to get a desktop and my dad is also getting a new one soon.  Will it be a dell??  NOPE!

90 Silverad0350, I would put emachines on the good side. Mine has been pretty good, the only thing I have had done to it(by a friend) is put a new ethernet card in it. The original one is a Realtech(?) brand, and it wouldn't work with my schools network, so I got a Linksys 10/100 LAN card and it works fine. I have had the computer since August of '02, so it has only been about six months. But a bunch of little things get on my nerves but it is mostly windows XP. By the way it has a 2000+ AMD Athlon Xp processor, 512 MB of ram, 80 GB hardrive, CD/RW 32 max speed, and a 16x max play DVD player. I got it all for $812 after rebates form Best Buy. I think I got a darn good deal, so I will put up with alot of little things with this computer before I get mad. Also a friend of mine has a Emachines, that isn't as loaded as mine, that he is very happy with, so unless someone here has had/heard of anything wrong with them then mark it as good.

My Dell has run flawlessly since I got it over a year ago.  This is the only PC I have ever bought that didn't crap out a component within the first 6 months of operation.  Also I have never had to call the tech line either.  Sorry to say this Ryan but I would buy another dell...

I'm not in a good mood so here goes:

F^&*K DELL and the horse they rode in on, they have nothing but been a pain in my ass...

I hop their stock drops the bottom out of it even if it brings they whole market down...

My case is worse than yours Ryan...

I basically have a 3500 dollar paperweight now,  my 8100 inspiron started acting up 4 months ago and not charging... they sent me power cable after power cable and it would only fix it for a couple weeks at a time... then last month it stopped again and the tech wannabe said it was the power converter on the motherboard that alot of the 8100's was doing the same

(get this the genius design dept at Dell put the power converter right beside the processor... imagine how hot that gets)

So they set up for a return to get it fixed under my FOUR YEAR WARRANTY...  well they get it and call back a week later and told me it was dropped at some point (shipping? at the shop? who knows) and that I would have to pay $939 dollars just for them to fix it because they couldn't just fix the power converter and send it back because it was in their contracts or some bullcrap.

Beat it all they sent it back unfixed, and now I CANNOT get ahold of anyone in dell finance to tell them that they will NEVER receive another payment from me till A. it's fixed or B.they cancel the contract and take back their piece of crap.

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences Ryan!  That would get me P.O.'d too.

Although I normally do not opt for extended warranty's, I always recommend one for a laptop.  Laptops are much more finiky than desktops.  We have gone years with no complaints on Dell Desktops.

I support 3 Dell Laptops.  I have had one burn up 2 modems w/in 2 years.  I think that was because of the phone line it was hooked to.

I would seek a person "higher up" in customer service at Dell to try to get satisfaction.  With the telephone customer service reps, I have usually found that they are much less knowledgeable than the average computer techie.

Don't accept rejection.

As the IT Manager for my office, I would say all laptops SUCK! I don't care what brand it is, we experience problems with them all. The most problems come from the Dell units. The least come from Gateway. I would have to say Gateway makes a pretty stable laptop system.

My gateway laptop which i bought in 98 still is running.   The speakers are the only thing that doesnt work (its my brothers now).  The laptop is still uasble but it is a PITA having to have a keyboard hooked up to it.

My dad owns stock in dell.  He was all hyped about getting a dell computer but he knows what kinda problems i have had so he is looking at (not looking he is going to) get a gateway and probably sell his dell stock.

Obviously its a known problem (went out twice) and they dont make that series of laptop anymore.

I hear ya. I bought my Laditude back in 00 and the monitor went out, they came to my place of work and replaced it for me free, now at a little over two years it is acting up again. This time it is out of warranty. Just my luck.

We also have a no name Chem Book 7200 that I bought when I went to Korea in 99 and it is working flawlessly. My luck of the draw I guess. :D

I have a Gateway that I've had for about 4 years now.  I've had so many problems out of it, and had friends in the same boat that I swore I would never get another one.

My wife had a Compaq Laptop, that the monitor went bad on in less than 6 months useage.  But they fixed it free of charge no problem.

We decided when she got her new laptop to get a Dell Inspiron 2650.  She has only had it for a few weeks, but so far it seems like it is great.  The only thing I don't like about it is that there is no port that her digital camera will plug into , so I'm going to have to install it on my desktop (which I don't like to do b/c the more stuff I have on this thing the more it screws up).
