Installed FM Modulator

Just finished installing my FM Modulator a couple of minutes ago.  It's the type you hardwire into the antenna cable, not the ones that send out a FM signal.  All I have to do is turn my radio to 88.5 and make sure something is plugged into the rca inputs.  It works great.

This will definitely be cool on the long road trips when the laptop is plugged in and the DVDs are playing....

Thought I'd let you guys know since I haven't heard many people do it yet!

I had to use a FM Modulator for my 6-disc CD changer that I installed with my factory head unit in my car about 10 yrs ago.  It's not the cleanest signal, but it gets the job done when you don't have a deck with CD changer controls or other misc. inputs.

Well since I don't have my center console completed yet (I blame GM and Parts Zone Online for that) I don't have a "good" setup yet.  I'll see if I can get pics of my laptop in my buddies truck like I would have it setup.  Basically, the laptop sit on top of the cup holder area and points back.  It's an iBook so it's pretty small and fits in well.

One other thing I noticed about it.  On FM 88.5, I couldn't get the signal to come through very clearly at all.  There was another signal on that freq. but when I turned the FM Mod on, it went away but the signal from the laptop was too faint to hear and there was static.  I changed the modulator over to FM 88.9 and tried the whole thing again and it sounded much better without any static. There was also another station on that freq. but it too went away once the modulart was on.  Weird ain't it? :D

Its best to select a station that has the weakest signal on it. preferrably nothing but static. The modulator is sending the signal, so the less interference from a radio station coming into it the better.

:thumb: Guys, why mess around with the FM mod when you can plug right into the head unit (factory) with a patch cable and it will play with the same clarity and sound level as a cd. Get on over to JP Customs or logjam electronics and they can hook you up. You just plug in your rca inputs from whatever and go to cd on the radio and you have sound that no fm mod can match. They make a cord for vehicles with or without a slave unit and you can still use the factory cd.

Exactly.  No need for the FM modulator.  Here are some web sites to research the right product for your setup.

Interfaces for 03's are just starting to come out.  One is available for the new headunit but only if you've purchased the rear seat dvd option.  I've been assured by more than one mfg that more models are on the way (I have the bose six disc in dash setup but no rear seat dvd so I'm stuck for a while...)

Not when you already have a 10 disc like mine, the kenwood would not plug into the sony. Had to use the modulator.

Almost the same here.  Changed the factory HU out and put in a  Kenwood, but it doesn't have any aux inputs so the FM Modulator was necessary!  I did look at the JP kit but didn't do it once I found out it was for the stock HU.
