6.2L Sierra Transmission and engine overheating..

Recommended Posts

I am a big GM fan; I have been sand dunning with GMs since early 90's and they always did just great!

However, my 2010 6.2L 1500 Sierra keeps overheating very often on dunes I don't get why?! Yes it does come down very quickly but I don't feel comfortable seeing my temp gauge going up to the 3/4 mark too often. Moreover, the transmission Temp goes up to 232 F which again does not feel comfy either!

is it something normal and I have to live with it or I have to do something? upgrade engine/transmission radiators perhaps? any recommendations?

I use 5W30 Castrol Magnatic btw ( which is the recommended viscosity by the manufacturer!)

Get a bigger trans cooler. Check fan operation. Have radiator checked. Consider replacing rad. with a larger unit

Thanks a lot. The truck had been checked by best shops in town for any mulfunctions/ leaks but everything is working just fine. besides it only overheat while offroading.

I actually have been thinking of replacing both coolers ( Trans is for sure... still thinking for the engine) do you recommend any ?

I have never upgraded a cooler before and not sure what are the excellent brands.

If you dont want to spend big money for the trans cooler like I did go with a tru cool 40k

Hayden and Tru Cool are two of the many brands out there. A more than adequate cooler should run you less than $100. You can also upgrade to a larger trans pan that holds 2-3 more quarts of fluid.

If you get that high of trans temp, plan on changing the oil much more often.

That chart is outdated and does not reflect the 6 speeds running Dextron VI which is synthetic. Temps around 200 are on the higher end of normal operation. I'd say 250ish is when I'd begin to worry.

OP,

Are you running 4 high or 4 low? Do you keep the trans in D or are you locking out higher gears to prevent unneeded shifting? I ran mine in 4low and M4 for most of my time at Silver Lake and the truck did fine.
