Looking at building a computer

I know the key parts I want. The computer is going to be for Videos, surfing the web when bored, act as a storage device, do my downloading and disc writing.

So far on my list is

Processor-Intel i5-3570k

Board-Asus Maximus V Extreme

Sound-Creative ZXR

Video-Asus GTX670-DC2-4GD6

Ram-Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 2400 8GB

HDD-SanDisk Ultra Plus 256 GB SATA 3 SSD, and a second drive is undecided

It will run some kind of Linux Distro and also work as a bit of a server for video and music to my other network devices

Not really. I need an indoor project. I may do some gaming. I will be using the correct hardware for gaming but I will be running linux when it is built. I will be open to some if they catch my eye. Setting up for later.

For speed and capacity, been having good luck with Caviar Black drives. The 256GB for the OS ought to be OK for Linux.

Might also consider a gigabit (not that much more than 10/100 switches anymore) switch instead of wireless if you are currently using wireless now. Less chance of interruptions to streaming, important for a server.

Personally, gave up on SB years ago and went with an HT Striker. Sounds great. Looks SB have possibly redeemed themselves with their latest offerings.

Since it is a server, don't scrimp on the cooling and power supply! I recommend a power supply with 120mm cooling fan with low db rating. PF correcting will usually be more efficient (runs cooler).

It will be in the bedroom next to my Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, and right next to the router so I will be running Cat 6 to the router. I didnt look, but is a separate network card required or is it built into the board

I did a quick look and at least the revision of the board I looked at, 10/100/1000 thin net LAN is included.

Would dual RJ45 do anything for me?

IMO, no. I assume you are thinking of increased BW, if so you would have to bond the two interfaces and have the appropriate intelligent switch. More setup, not at needed for what you are doing, etc. Or split the network and run some services to one interface and others to the other interface. Again, not really needed. Unless you are wanting to serve video up to a LOT of people.

5 different rooms including the room the computer is in. At most 2 or 3 using at once

I got sick of loosing my shit on drive failures. I'd recommend two 1TB HDD's mirrored for storage. Check the cache and read times on the disk drives.

I will be using back ups. 1 or 2. Most my important files are on my laptop

I am going to use a solid state for commonly accessed files, looking at a 2+ TB for movies and music, and about a 500 gb for other files. Then 2-1 gb externals for backups of important files and photos

I may be a little late here but unless you really want to over clock that board is overkill you can get one that will work just the same as far as you seem like you will use it now for half price, and unless you want to game the video card is overkill too. Though in my opinion if you get an i5 getting at least a gtx 660/760 wouldn't be bad either though you could always get a mobo with integrated graphics and upgrade to a dedicated card when you felt like gaming.

I would get two or three 1 or 2 tb drives for storage and mirror or raid 5 them. like you were suggesting that or setup a backup program with versioning would be good too.

The initial use will be as stated, but I am building for gaming later if something catches my eye

I wish I had a second machine right now, my 1 1/2 year old Dell's hard drive crashed this morning. Probably has something to with being dropped by a friend a while ago.

Side note, there are no good computer shops here. And I don't have time to screw with it myself. I need it back ASAP for homework and SolidWorks.
