Front springs different between suspension packages?

Are the front springs (not the struts but just the sprngs themselves) between the different suspension packages the same or different?

 

I might need new springs when I replace my struts with some Bilsteins but they don't say what suspension package they are for and nothing I have found differentiates if the springs are universal between packages or if they are specific for the package. I know the struts are but not sure on the springs.

Why would you need new springs on an '08??

 

As far as I know they're the same .... don't see why they'd need another spring .. or want to spend money on tooling for another spring.

 

The only "suspension package" I'm aware of is Z71 ... which isn't much of anything that I'm aware of. Maybe rear springs ....

 

My truck says YD5 for front springs, and I threw Bilsteins in a couple years ago. Then there's some "component" in the "computer selected suspension" that says 6SY for Left, & 7SY for Right - no idea wtf that is ...

 

Just FYI, in case your removing the struts and doing them yourself .... those springs are EXTREMELY heavy! My floor mounted spring compressor wouldn't even flex them 1mm. No shops in the area had a press big enough either. Had to go to the dealer ...

There is also the Z60 and Z85 package.

 

I have the front leveled and it seems like the front has settled a little s I thought I might get some new springs at the same time I swap the struts. They have them on rockauto for only about $120 for the pair but they don't differentiate between the different suspension packages.

It would not surprise me if they used different springs if you added the nav radio with bose. Springs in a truck with the v6 will be different to the 6.2 engine.

 

The existing spring should have a tag on it. If you go to dealer for replacement springs, they will likely want that tag number. Aftermarket spring companies will likely only want to know what engine, and what suspension package it has. They may only have three or 4 different springs, OEM may have 10 different ones.

Ahh yeah, good point I didn't think of - there's a definite weight difference between the 6.2 and a V6, for sure.

You might have to look up part #s by vin# of known different trucks. A good dealer parts man might even know. Aftermarket doesn't always offer multi choices. Z85 has always been the base spring/susp.

Yes, the springs are different based on engine and can length. I swapped my front shocks out from the stock Rancho shocks to some 4600 Bilsteins. I used a basic wall mount spring compressor and had no issues compressing the spring. It was not any kind of "heavy duty" spring compressor. The springs don't need to be smashed to a pancake to get the shock out, maybe compressed 1-2" and that will allow u to take the top nut off with no problems. Just make sure to torque that top nut to the proper torque instead of hammering on it with an impact. Use a crowfoot on a torque wrench while holding the top part of the stem with a wrench. Good luck.
