Your thoughts on max tow package and 6.2

Your coming from a 3.42 5.3 truck and going to a 6.2 expecting better fuel economy?

I though I had seen it it all....

My 2010 Tahoe (5.3L / 3.42 gears) struggles when it tries to pull our 6,000 lb trailer. It's in the low 9s (mpg) trying to hold the trailer at 60mph. If I drop back to 55, it creeps up closer to 10mpg. But that's all I can get. I'm hoping the new truck with the 6.2/3.73 combination will get better economy, because it won't be working nearly as hard. The Tahoe has to run between 2500 and 3000 RPM just to try to get to 300 lbs of Torque, where as the Silverado will have over 350 lbs down below 2000 RPM. As for Horsepower, there again the Tahoe had to work overly hard to produce decent hp, where as the Silverado will again have more, at lower RPM. So, I have explained by thought process, now to see if it will pan out. I sure don't want to have to pay the money for a diesel.

You might get maybe 1 or 2 mpg better towing.. But it'll be worse unloaded. towing will be a lot nice with a bigger motor

My Tahoe is rated at 16/21 with a combined of 17mpg. The new Silverado is 14/20 with a combined of 17mpg. I'm thinking I may loose the one mile per gallon on the hwy side of the equation, but for whatever reason, I normally average around 18 to 19 on the Hwy anyway. But, I have other family cars to drive on road trips. The Silverado is for pulling the trailer now that we are retired. Time will tell..... Johnny

I've got a 2014 4WD HC Silverado, 6.2 w/3.42 RE, it gets about 18.5 MPG and runs like a scalded dog. If you don't run premium your MPG's will drop at least 4 MPG and there is a noticeable performance difference. I had a 2008 Z71 Vortec Max, I thought it was great motor until I got the 2014. The 08 got 13.5 MPG no matter what, it did have a leveling kit with BFG's, that probably didn't help in the MPG category. The HP increase in the 2014 is night and day, the 2014 is downright fast. I haven't towed anything with my new one yet but I'd bet it will pull a house.

765ft-lb of torque at 1600rpm will put a smile on your face. It's a pricy option, but a lot is returned when it is traded or sold.

That is true, diesels hold their value well, especially duramaxes. I personally have never met anyone who's been disappointed with a duramax.

My original plan was to hold out for a 2015 2500HD Duramax. Then I saw the 6.2L, and that it was 10K dollars cheaper. Knowing I only had 6 - 7000 lbs to hall, figured it was a better first bet. If it doesn't work for us, we'll try the Duramax later.

I have had 2 Duramax trucks and I agree they will put a smile on your face. I also had 2 Big block equipped suburbans. The 454 was pretty weak but the 8.1 while not as good as the diesel trucks was pretty stout. I have an 8.1 in my motorhome and it does a decent job considering when hauling the trailer the whole package is upwards of 27,000lbs. I figure the new 6.2 with almost 100 more hp and a smidge more torque than an 8.1 ought to do just fine. My main concern is will the rest of the chassis be up to the task that is generally reserved for 3/4 ton trucks. I lease my new vehicles and they quit leasing 3/4 ton stuff a while back. When I saw the ratings on the new Silverado 1/2 ton I figured it was worth looking into. I liked the way the one I test drove looked and drove so I ordered one that was equipped how I needed it because there weren't any around yet.

I have a 6.2 with the tow package on order.... hoping its sooner than later to get here.
my 2010 with a 5.3 has the 6 speed and as mentioned above by some others, its constantly trying to find a gear vs just going.... the new 5.3 I drove did the same thing. If the 6.2 does this, It will get a tune.
now as for the 6.2 and tow package.. how long am I looking to wait for my truck lol, worst ever wait was 13 weeks for my wifes Terrain,

13 weeks....that sounds pretty close....Hopefully they are moving now and you won't wait as long as the rest of us.

dealer is promising 6 weeks... IM not liking the 13 week option lol
although the terrain was a lie to begin with, this time my dealer used an allocation so hoping that speeds it up
