2014 Sierra 2500HD Denali

So, I just traded in my 2012 Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2 for a new 14' 2500 HD 6.0. I have about 600 miles on it, and want to change it over to synthetic Amsoil 5/30. Is it too early to change? Plan on long trip to ME this week, and would prefer to have synthetic in it.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks,

No its not to early. I did my truck at 750 miles and my car had right around 500 miles. Plenty of cars come from the factory with synthetic oil

Jeff - interested to know why you switched from a 1500 to 2500. Did you need more HD capability or did you just want something bigger? I am looking at a '14 1500 with the 6.2 motor currently. Your gas mileage must be low compared to the 6.2 you had? Thanks.

The 6.0 in a 3/4 ton gets worse MPG then the 6.2 in a half ton. The 2500 platform is a lot heavier then a half-ton platform.

So, after 700 miles I can tell you that mileage between the 2012 Sierra Denali 1500 with 3:42's vs, the 2014 sierra Denali 2500hd with 3:73's is close. 14' is getting 13.8 vs. the 12' 14.7. Other factor is the 14' does not require premium gas like the 12' 6.2 required. So net, I maybe a head just a bit from a gas cost perspective.

Primary reason for trading the 12' is due to towing limitations/safety. I currently have a 28' enclosed inline aluminum snowmobile trailer. The 12' pulled it fine, but a 1500 is light duty from a suspension and frame standpoint. The 12' 6.2 had no issues towing, but I always felt the the trailer was sometimes more in control instead of the truck. Mind you, I'm not a speed demon, and generally have my wife and kids with me, so safety is number 1 priority.

I actually looked into getting a 14' 1500, but learned from my local dealer that the new 6.2's were slow to be released due to the manufacturer of the new aluminum block having issues. Did not feel like getting a new truck and motor that had not been proven, also, not sure I am a fan of aluminum blocks. I would assume that this would take weight away vs. adding it.

After looking at the 2500hd Denali, there is no comparison in the structural gains in a 2500 vs. 1500. Cost between the two is minimal within 3-6 grand.

Here's a pic of my 1500, I'll load up one on the new one too.. Let me know of you have any other questions.
