Airbag sensor question

This is my first post... please be easy on me.  I just bought my first Chevy, a '97 Z-71 x-cab, and love it.  Moved to it from a Miata!  I have two questions, though.

1. My airbag light on the dash is on.  The truck hasn't been wrecked.  My brother who has a '96 Vette says it might be the sensor has lost its ground.  Could this be, should I clean it?  Where is it?

2. My check engine light is on, and I think its because I have an aftermarket exhaust by the previous owner, who ran true duals back to Flowmasters, with no sensors, no cats, no precats.  (There are no emission laws where I live).  Can I somehow pull OBD codes from my truck without a computer?  If not, where's the best place to buy a tool to read them?

Thanks

You can take your truck to AutoZone and they will read your computer for free.

As for the airbag deal, it could be a bad ground, but I have never messed with one, nor do I want to...

Good Luck, and welcome to the forum!!!!  Enjoy!!!
