Installing Rear View Mirror Backup Camera with OnStar System

I have a regular cab 2WT and the rear backup camera is not available unless you go into the LT trim ($3,310) plus Convenience Package ($1,130) plus tax.

I am debating if I should get this because I have a the regular cab with a Tonneau cover. I was wondering the quality of the backup camera located in the rear view mirror. Is there problems getting the wire up to the rear view mirror when you have the drivers assist interior handle and can you also take off your tailgate when the camera is installed? Chevy garage can install this item. About 1 to 2 hours labor time depending on the truck and garage.

How do people like their back up cameras?

Maybe there are other people thinking of getting a backup camera for their truck.

I pulled the trigger and order the Brandmotion backup camera for the Chevy Silverado Truck WT-2 (also good for the LT without backup cameras) with the On-Star mirror. This is number 9002-1010. The cheapest place to order it was SavingLots.com. I should get it by Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. I cant wait to start this project.

It looks straight forward but I never solder and cover with heat shrink tubing and I dont like to remove the A pillar again. I added the drivers handle prior. See instructions above. This would be a new venture and I will just have to work through it.

The Chevy dealer wants about $200 +/-. Installation by Brandmotion is estimated between 75-105 minutes. A DIY insulation is estimated between 105-165 minutes. Professional installation is recommended. It most likely will take me longer. I was told since this backup camera has its own system and I wouldnt have to go to Chevy garage to reprogram the truck computers etc.

This is a great company and they treated me very well on a pass installation. I had started to install this same type of camera from Brandmotion on my 2008 Chevy Silverado LS model. At that time, I called Brandmotion and spoke to Jeff Varick he was a former employee engineer from GM and president of this company. I was told the camera for the 2008 Chevy Silverado worked for all models. That is why I purchased it. I started to get into this project and found out the wire harness to the On-Star mirror was not correct for the LS model and the camera did not work. You needed a compass and temperature display wiring in the mirror to get it to work. The LS model did not have this option. He had his employees called the Chevy garage and they made the correct wire harness to the mirror so it would work. Brandmotion reimbursed me the additional cost to make this wire harness and the labor cost to complete the final installation completed by the Chevy garage.

Maybe I had something to do with their new 2014 back up camera for the WT-1 and WT-2 including LT without backup cameras. They did not give me a hard time and I didnt expect this great service. All I knew, I had a big problem and a few seconds it was gone.

I think this is the only company that makes backup cameras with On-Star Service mirror.

Brandmotion also makes the back-up camera for the 2014 Chevy Silverado Truck WT-1 without the On-Star mirror. This is model number 9002-1015.

Just hope I have the same luck with this new backup camera on my 2014 Silverado.

I put one in my 2011 Silverado LT. It just took time to run the wires, but relatively straight forward. Sure was better than not having one!

I installed the Brandmotion On Star mirror and backup camera on Monday and it is very nice. The camera view is in the rear view mirror and it has a very sharp picture with a 3 1/2 picture with parking lines. The camera is in the tailgate. You do not have to have the dealership reset the truck computer. This is the only option I had when you get a WT2/WT1 2014 Silverado truck.

The other option is ordering an LT model (regular truck - convenience package - more money) and you get the backup camera in the 4"2 diagonal radio color screen. About $3,500 +/- (included items I don need) more money just to get this backup camera upgrade. My cost for the parts was $591.50 (shopping around/through Brandmotion wanted $829.95) and if you have the Chevy garage do the labor, it would be about $200 - $220 more plus tax.

I also checked out the On Star mirror and backup camera by Rostra. It is the same with different wiring hookups but with the same principal. Rostra usually purchases their products from tailgate camera.com and just put their name on the products. Pricing was the same if you went directly with Rostra instead of shopping around.

It took me about three hours and the installation was easy and right on. The big plus by having the camera view in the mirror is that you only have to look in one area when you are backing up. I guess if you have the bigger screen display, you wouldn't need the mirror at all to review. I have all my On-Star functions as well as an auto dimming mirror. Everything was provided to complete the installation. I like it a lot and it looks good.

Nice mod to have and that is all I need for my purposes.

After everything all said and done, if you have the 4"2" screen in your WT truck or LT truck that doesn't have the rear view camera, I was wondering if you could still add the backup camera to the 4"2" screen. It appears if you order the LT with (regular truck - convenience package) the backup camera works from the 4"2" screen. The camera parts are not offered from GM and I am not sure if there is a different wire harness to hook up the camera (convenience package) to 4"2" screen with (installed in factory) a backup camera. Is this the same with the trailer brake - if you don't get it from the factory you can't add it after it is made? Has anyone ever pulled out the 4"2" radio display unit to see if they are any other openings to hook up a back up camera or to add two more speakers on a four speaker system on GM radios? Some trucks come with six speakers and some come with only four speakers. WT2 comes with four speakers on the regular trucks and the LT come with six speakers which both uses the 4"2" screen. Is it possible to add the other two more speakers? I only see backup camera that work from the rear view mirror on the after market.

I did see the LT package that uses the small screen (I04 screen) with and without the backup camera. You would need to get the wiring for the power supply to a camera in the tailgate area. You would need wiring, camera and new tailgate opener cover with camera cut out. Next you would have to check if the camera could be plugged into your small screen. Wiring diagram etc. I don't know if the Chevy garage will have to reprogram the system. You should double check with the Chevy garage to see if this is possible. It should not cost that much. If it could be done the parts should be available through Chevy because the factory does it on the LT models with backup camera.

It also looks likes like you can now order it on the 2015 WT models in the convenience package.
