Willy Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 The rear bumber on my new truck appears to be rusting!? I asked the dealer to check it out when I went in for the first oil change at 3000miles and they told me it was foreign material that had attached itself to the bumber and was rusting. They said it wiped right off. O.K., I felt dumb for complaining. Last night, now at 5000miles, I washed the truck and noticed that there were now 5 larger spots on the rear bumper that were all rust colored! Once again the rust wiped off. However, it appears that there are very small pin holes in the chrome and the rust is starting to come through. Anyone else found this on there truck?
fmjcafe Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 I haven`t noticed it on my truck but I`ll definately be taking a look. IMO, wipe off or not, they should give you a new bumper.
BlueRado Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 Willy, during my last panic wash to get the $%^& salt off, I too noticed these rust spots on my '03 rear bumper near the bottom right close to the plastic cover. I'll take it up w/ my dealer this Spring after the salt sprays end. Actually, my '99 had exactly the same problem, in the same place, and the dealer replaced it without even a word, claiming maybe bad chrome job. In about the next 2 years after replacing that bumper, I didn't see the spots come back. I'd complain and get them to replace it. I will be doing that soon.
RyanbabZ71 Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 what side is it on? Is it on the side with the exhaust? If so gm knows about the problem but never fixed it. I have a slight spot on the exhaust side.
BlueRado Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 Yep, now that ypou mention it, both of mine, the old '99 and new one had/have spots on the exhaust side.
Willy Posted February 21, 2003 Author Posted February 21, 2003 Actually, my biggest spot is on the drivers side, opposite of the exhaust. I've also found more rust spots on the front bumper that's even worse! I called the service manager once again. He said they would order new bumpers right away under warranty, no questions asked. BlueRado is right about the $%^#ing salt! I think I'll wait another month or two before I install the new ones. I don't know about where you guys live but here in New York State, the salt trucks seem to run 24 hours a day, snow or shine-It's no wonder our taxes are so high! I'd rather drive on snow and ice!
BlueRado Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 I'm in the SE Michigan area, and the salt spreading seems to have gotten WAY out of hand this year! You know it's overkill when dry you are driving in a salt dust haze!!! ??? I lived in the Finger Lakes region till age 13 - west side of Seneca Lake. I miss the area.
SilveradoWV Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 I noticed the inside of my front bumper looks to have some rust coming through some pin holes. I plan on waiting till I wash it up and see if it continues to grow before complaining. We used to have that salt problem here in WV but I think we ran out about a month ago.
Firetiger(MN) Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 I had the same thing happen with my '99. Happens on both sides behind the tires. The tires kick up rocks, etc. and create these small pinholes in the chrome for rust to take hold. It also helps to wax your chrome to put a layer of protection on. No spots on my '02....yet. I'm waiting for them to appear, and I bet they will sooner or later.
