I have a 04 Chevy Silverado 1500 what's the best way to get better gas mileage?

The best way is to accelerate slowly and don't drive over 65 for the most part. I cruise at 45 on two lane roads and my last tank was 16.5 MPG with a 2001 GMC Sierra z71 4x4

A tonneau cover wil help if you do not already have one.

Drive like there's an egg between the gas pedal and your foot and drive more slowly. Drag increases with the square of speed, so the faster you go, your mileage decreases disproportionately. Driving my Duramax, I can get 20 mpg going 69 mph. If I step it up to 75, my mileage drops to 17-17.5. I've found it was the same whether I had the air conditioner running or not.

Also, I've read a study that driving with the windows closed yields better gas mileage.

You can overinflate your tires a bit; I generally run a couple pounds over on my Suburban. You'll suffer slightly in traction and ride quality if you go too much, but you might derive a tenth or two of benefit.

Of course, if you really want to get serious, switch over to the (numerically) lowest rear end that you can get. I requested a Suburban with the 3:42 specifically for that reason. Your acceleration will suffer, it won't tow as well, but you should get a bump in fuel mileage.

Changing your habits like stated is the best way... You could spend money on tuners tonneaus exhaust and intake but you're probably not going to recoup that cost in fuel savings

This!

Mods will actually cost you more in gas because your truck will be more responsive and sound better so you will have more fun with it...

Not necessarily true. I have cat back dynomax on my 2013, Diablo tune, and Airaid MIT and I prefer to drive it easy. I like the mellow rumble of the lower RPM's by driving right. I don't want to rev up the engine and sound like an open piped Harley taking off. It is rare for me to ever go above 2200 RPM, except in the rare occasions I get on an interstate on ramp and need to kick it in the rear to merge with traffic, and I might get on an interstate once a month. Nice thing about living rural and a lot of casual two lane roads I drive on. I outgrew the teenager driving style decades ago. I like that gradual build up in speed with that exhaust. And when you combine some better aerodynamics in the mix with something like a tonneau cover, it just adds to the better driving style.

On the aerodynamic side, I saw this and have been trying to figure out a way to do something similar......
