malfunctioning electric motor noise in dash?

I have a noise that happens at seemingly random, but it is getting more common. It sounds like a malfunctioning harddrive with the platters spinning and stopping over and over. Sometimes it is quiet, sometimes I can hear it over the radio even. I originally posted this under the assumption that it was my CD player drive going bad. But I am pretty sure it is not that, as it happens even when the radio is off and no CD is in the player. It happens when the truck is running but also when it is in accessory mode. It happens when the AC is on or off. I dont have NAV, so it should not be an actual harddrive (and if they are not using solid state memory then GM needs their head examined anyway).

My wife's 4runner recently a bad servo in her AC system that sounded very similar. This makes me wonder if anyone has had any issues with bad servos, motors, or anything else related to small electric motors in the dash?

Of course the dealer can never hear this when I am there and it is too faint to record, so I dont even know how to diagnose this problem.

Thanks for you help.

So I think I may have figured out what the cause is - the DC-DC converter for the USB connections! I keep my phone plugged in to the dash mounted USB outlets in the console. I usually plug it in before I start the car and take it out when I leave. However this day, I plugged it in while driving and instantly noticed the buzzing/whirl sound. It still sounds like a malfuncitoning hard-drive platter, but at least now I know the cause. Or at least how to create it for the shop to hear.

I think I'm getting this same noise. I thought it was the fan in the A/C, but I'll look more closely to see if me plugging in my phone changes anything.

My truck has 3000kms on it now. I walked to the truck this afternoon and opened the door and immediately heard a buzzing sound (electronic). It lasted about 2 seconds and went away.

I had the passenger door opened and heard that exact same noise, it must be a normal thing.

Nothing is normal about that. There's an issue for sure!

This is my theory on what that noise is, just a theory so don't get excited, ok? Opening a door activates a vent to the outside, making it easier to close the door giving the inside air someplace to escape. I had a Dodge Challenger that cracked the window when opening the door and automatically closed after shutting the door. Make sense??
