New User/AFM 5.3 likely bit dust/ engine swap info help!

My 2008 Sierra 1500 5.3 has had oil consumption issues since 50,000 miles. Dealers ran around problem and did bandaid fixes and I had to drive it for work, out of warranty now. 120,000 miles, slight tick the last few days and this morning I'm going to pass this old lady and felt almost a bang or pop, I was almost to work so i limped there, Engine running rough and almost feels like it could die at stop light, Check Engine Light Flashing, Stabilitrak and Traction Control lights came on too. Went into limp home mode. Checked Oil: good. Unhooked battery to reset for awhile: restarted and everything came back. So I took it to Advance auto to check codes, P0306 - #6 cylinder misfire. So I buy a spark plug/ set of spark plug wires, and ignition coil. Old spark plug covered in oil: replaced: no change. Plug wire and coil don't make any difference either. Re-check new spark plug, Oily.

Goes to dealer in AM to confirm, but Im guessing I lost rings in cylinder #6. I realize it could be and AFM problem and stuck lifter as well.

At this point, I don't want to replace a piston in an engine that's had consumption issues for 70,000 miles just to have the rest of the engine blow soon. Oil has gotten low a few times, but was really bad the first time when I didn't know I had to check it constantly.

If the GM repair is more than a $1000 id rather just find a 6.0 to put in it.

So the fun Part: My trans works well, so what non-afm engines can I make work with my transmission? What else would be required for each engine? I've thought of getting and entire 6.0/6.2 engine and transmission/wiring harness and doing that but im sure it would be very expensive. I think I can get a 6.0/non AFM 5.3 from wreckage yard or engine swap for $1000-$1500. I've done a lot of engine work, rebuild a 473 detroit and also the I6 in my old land cruiser, but never anything this new with as many wires or a computer, but Im sure I can figure it out. What do you guys reccomend? SORRY FOR THE LONG POST. Thanks for helping!

I would vote for the 6.0. I had a 2001 2500HD with it. Total Beast.

 

Problem is it would pass anything but a gas station. If you're not worried about mileage, no issues.

 

They are plentiful though.

Sorry to hear about your engine troubles. My advice, get rid of all the junk AFM related components whether it be a rebuild, different engine etc... No point in having that useless over complicated crap put back in if it's a catastrophic engine failure. Best thing you can do for engine longevity is lose AFM.

And you don't think there is metal in the engine from that lifter collapsing or that lifter possibly wearing the cam lobe down? Is the consensus that the cam and lifter could be changed to fix engine or that it will still need rebuilt? The spark plug had oil on it, is this coming from below piston or above in valvetrain?

Cam and lifters can be replaced without an engine rebuild. Any metal will be in the pan or trapped by the oil filter.

 

What is the verdict from the dealer?

Dealer says it should have a new engine because metal shavings could have gotten into engine and caused harm. Want $8000 to replace engine. They should have replaced it free under warranty.

Find another shop. That's way too much

 

You never have said what the dealer found. You've alluded to just lifter and cam. Plenty of people have replaced just those and moved on without problems

Just looking at this from the outside in, if someone were to rebuild a AFM designed 5.3L and make it a non-AFM engine, that would also necessitate using a different ECM, or at least programming, right? No experience whatsoever in dealing with a AFM engine rebuild and avoiding all that stuff, so just trying to get my mind around what all would it take to do something like that, from a hardware standpoint and how that relates to the stock ECM.

Cool. At least it is a simple deal like that. Wasn't sure if there would be any issues addressing it that way. Sometimes, with other engines, just turning off or disabling something in the ECM doesn't work because the the event may be disabled, but the ECM still communicates with the devices or sensors. That was my only worry about rebuilding or using a replacement crate engine without AFM related components, that the ECM would still be trying to communicate with something that isn't there. Just my paranoia over the way the OEM's have intertwined things so much.

Glad to hear that!! Glad the dealer stepped up and did the right thing (though I think even charging you the diagnostic fee is a bit lame, I could still be happy with it)

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
