Fixing paint chips with touch-up paint

I have a few paint chips on my hood that I want to fix. I thought about trying Dr. Color Chip but have read so many mixed reviews I figured I would try the GM touchup paint with just the pen and brush.

What is the best way to get a good repair? I thought about doing what somebody suggested while reading the Dr. Colorchip reviews.

1. Fill chip with touchup paint

2. Use a squeegee for tinting windows (or maybe one of those plastic razor blades) and drag it over the chip to smooth out paint and remove excess. Maybe even one of the pink trapezoid erasers that elementary kids use?

3. Use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover or sticker remover to get excess paint off body

4. Let dry and repeat as needed to fill hole

5. Polish, wax, etc after it cures completely

Does that sound like it should work? It's basically the same process as using Dr. Color Chip but with OE touchup paint.

Does anybody else have a better way to do it? I know it won't be 100% perfect but looking to cover it up as best I can.

Your suggested procedure sounds like it would work. Personally, I used Dr. Colorchip and I thought it worked great on chips; less so on long scratches but still better than nothing.

That process mainly fills to where you can't feel the chip and possibly can't see it unless your looking, kinda like filling a hole with dirt but yes it will work just time consuming.

This topic caught my eye, I've been wanting to take care of the couple little chips I have. I also have a spot that I'll need to take care of where the front mudflaps rubbed thru the paint. I'm removing the flaps in install factory flares and want to make sure there's no chance for rust in there down the road.

Ryan - ever used the OEM paint pens or do you prefer the Automotivetouchup.com version? Just curious. Thanks.

To the OP - let us know what you decide to do and throw some pics up afterwards. Good luck!
