Update:

 

***Pressure sensation is practically GONE!!!***

 

OK, hear me out. I've been determined to crack this thing... I did what I mention in my last couple posts about pulling the amp fuse (Fuse 48 on the front passenger fuse box), driving the truck for about 15mins, re-installing the fuse and riding w/ the windows down/open sunroof for another 15mins -- all in hopes of "resetting the atmosphere" inside the cabin of the Yukon.

 

It has been about a week since I've taken our Denali for a ride (wife drives it all week, no time for me to experiment). I finally was able to take the truck out for some Christmas shopping -- all the while, focusing on if I had the pressure in my ears that I was experiencing. I sh*t you not, it was NOTHING like what I was feeling before... I'm still noticing a little hint of rumble in my ears, but the pressure is practically gone! I no longer feel the sense of something not being right inside the cabin. It's actually comfortable and enjoyable to ride in. I'm actually loving the thing - when before, it was pissing me off w/ the uncomfortable pressure.

 

I would really like to have anyone who is having the "pressure" sensation in their Yukon to try the steps I've mentioned! It could really help, especially if it's the Bose noise canceling system creating the pressure like I was guessing... (??)

 

I realize it seems crazy, as doing those steps really shouldn't change much (to my basic knowledge), but I do know the truck has completely changed the way it feels while riding.

 

I just need someone else to do the same :)

Wow. I can't believe this is really an issue. My wife and I bought a 2015 Yukon XL Denali at the end of October. We actually ordered it in June. We were getting annoyed it took so long to come in. Now, I wish it never came in. Anyway, after about a month of driving it, I decided that yes, there definitely was some kind of "buffeting" noise. And yes, I too think it sound like when a rear window is open. So, I mentioned it to my wife and she said she noticed it the day we brought it home (my god, why didn't she say something. I would have drove it right back to the dealership!). Anyway, that eliminates something that degraded in the month we've had it.

 

OK, here are some things I've observed and am thinking:

 

- so, I also notice a "buffeting" noise. I can feel the pressure on my ears and hear the "whomping". Like a sub-woofer gone mad. (Side note: does anyone feel the sub-woofer actually works? Seems almost none existent to me. Where is it even located?)

- it is very annoying to me. No headache, but longest trip I've taken it on is about 20 minutes to run errands. It does annoy me and is extremely tiring on the ears. I can't imagine taking it on a 3 hour road trip. Would be torture.

- my wife definitely notices it but only at higher speeds.

- I notice it starting at very low speed, something like 20 or 30 km/hr (ya, I'm from Canada). I really notice it when slowing down. Seems to stop at about 20 km/hr.

- in fact, it stops so dramatically, it's almost like a switch being turned off. Which initially made me think it was something to do with the electronic shocks (magnetic ride blah blah blah), or the noise cancelling. I wouldn't be surprised that both of those are speed activated and turn off and very low speed.

- as a test, I removed the fuse from the "real time suspension" system which I assume is the electronic shock damping, and to be honest, it seemed slightly better. Less pronounced at lower speeds, but still there. About the same at highway speeds.

- I am going to try to pull the fuse for the sound system to see if defeated the noise cancellation does anything.

- but, now I'm reading this thread and seeing all the discussion about the roof and the not being connected to the cross members. Really GM? Are you kidding? What a pile of junk. Even if it is not the cause of this noise, how can they put out such a POS? But it did make me think. When I picked up the vehicle on delivery day, I happens to notice 4 "dimples" on the roof, evenly spaced out. Now, the these are not easily noticeable. The only reason I saw them is that the dealership's delivery stall is a one level below the showroom and I could stand and look at the new, shines roof. I pointed it out to the dealership and they checked and all the ones on the lot were the same. Now, is it related? Can't say for sure.

- so, I guess the next step is to contact the dealership and start the whole fricken process. I can't believe I'm going to have to go through the pain and agony of trying to get this sorted out on an $84,000 vehicle. Man, Obama should have just let GM die the death they deserved to die!

 

Well, we'll see what happens. What a pain.

 

Please, please try what I've suggested. You seem very capable and I would like to know I'm not completely crazy :)

Weird. I rented a 2015 Yukon XL while my truck (in my signature) was in the body shop after a fender-bender. I had it for two weeks.

 

It had 15000 miles on it, so it must have been a fairly early build.

 

It did not have this issue at all.

Hey 20Sierra14,

 

Man, I was going to pull the fuse for the audio system tonight and go for a drive but decided to take it easy! Rats. Now I really wish I had. Will do ASAP, but like yourself, my wife drives it every day shuttling our kids around (that's why we got the thing!!). Anyway, I will try to give it a go tomorrow after work and report back. Stay tuned!

Question for you. Was your rental a Denali or SLT? If this issue is the noise cancelling, I'm pretty sure the SLT doesn't have it, which would explain why you didn't notice it. Now I seem to recall at least one person on this tread who has observed this noise saying they have an SLT, so that would shoot my theory. But, worth asking.

Now I seem to recall at least one person on this tread who has observed this noise saying they have an SLT, so that would shoot my theory. But, worth asking.

I haven't confirmed if the SLT has the same noise cancellation as the Denali. Do you know? I did read something about a specially valves exhaust to reduce noise on both. This sounded suspect. Edited by spacetiger

You guys are freaking me out! As you know, I got my money back on the first Denali due to the pressure. I was dizzy and had brutal headaches everyday. It sounded like GMC may have fixed it after the took many back from Prairie, TX and back to Arlington for some reason. So, I decided to try again and my new Denali is on its way as I type. I thought the 2015i had this fixed...

From my knowledge, I believe GM uses Noise Canceling of some sort in their full size SUVs. It may not have the exact name as the "active noise cancelation" that comes w/ the 6.2's, but I *think* they use the sound system to kill the road noise... Or heck, it could be that these things are sealed up so well, you may just be able to open and close all the windows/sunroof to essentially break the seal :)

Well I drove another SLT tonight that seems to be the best one yet. I think I'm going to buy it. I played with the rear hatch bumpers half way out to create softer seal against between the door and body. That seemed to help a small bit. I will try full out tomorrow when I take the wife back to drive it. BTW I did go to the doc yesterday and found that I already had a ton of fluid on my inner ears due to a virus. That will make me more sensitive to it than others (same reason they tell you not to fly with a head cold).

 

The v4 mode change wasn't as prevalent in this one compared to the others. If we buy it I'll try the fuse pull and see if it works on an SLT. For now the pressure that I do feel isn't uncomfortable or making my head explode like the first one I drove.

We have the 5.3 SLT. WITH pressure issue. Not isolated to the LTZ's, Denalli's, and Escalades.

I was invited down to our dealer a few days back to drive a new 2015.5 Denalli. Had it sitting there waiting for me. UNFORTUNATELY it's a little better then our SLT but not better enough to buy yet another SUV. Went and tried a 2015.5 Escalade as well. Same thing. The salesman picked up on the issue as well. It's such a let down, I'm ready to switch out for a new Escalade for they are so incredible inside. But can't with this issue not yet corrected.

GM has agreed to either switch ours for a new unit, or give a 100% refund. Hate to say it, but as much as we love this new SUV, I'm leaning towards the refund and finding something else till they get this under control. ???

Jason ... I can understand your concern. OTOH, I have had two 15 Denali's (2015 and 2015i) so far and neither of them have had the problem you're referring to. Yes Bose is doing a seriously crummy job over driving the bass in some music selections; but, the buffeting issue hasn't come my way (yet). [both have had 20" Continental tires ... I want the deeper sidewalls and soon, bead locks. The 2015 came with 22" wheels...the ride was stiff but no buffeting whilst the 22's were on the truck.]

While waiting on my new SLT to be prepped, they gave me a Sierra Denali to drive. It's a 15 model and I think they wanted me to trade my tundra. Not going to happen.

 

Wow.. The pressure and buffetting was tremendous. My head was about to explode after 10 mins of driving. Had to drive with windows down just to stand it. After 4 hours I was still hurting with ear and head aches. What's common? AFM and the noise canceling is all I can figure. As soon as I take delivery of the yukon I am going to try the fuse pull to get rid of the last bit of pressure sensation. It is no where near what I feel in this Sierra. Craziness. I'm also going to talk to service tech to see if they can turn it off in the ECU diagnostics tool. Anyone checked on this?

    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you  
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.
