Removing the Air Bag and Steering Wheel

So just an FYI for those wanting steering wheel radio controls. You have to have io5/io6 to get the controls and the way the guy was talking it might be plug and play if you upgrade, but I'm not sure.

Wow, that would be sweet if that were the case! So the wheel might be a direct plug in and work if you have the 8" touch screen??? I may want to upgrade both.

How hard was it to remove the airbag and steering wheel? I would like to swap mine out which has cruise control and the other functions for one that is heated. I would like to see if I could get that. Does anyone think that will be plug and play as well.

From what I have read its not that hard. There are instructions at the front of this forum. If you want to sell your current wheel I maybe would buy if the price is right.

If you want the heated wheel you will need a new clock spring.

SierraGuy, where did you hear or read this? I have upgraded my WT to IO6, and have been following this thread, but haven't pulled the trigger on buying a wheel and clockspring because nobody has gotten it to work 100% yet... Any info is appreciated.

I actually did not hear that it was plug and play, but I was talking to Chris White (or one of his employees/coworkers) about upgrading my DIC to the color DIC with steering wheel controls and his reply was that the steering wheel controls and DIC rely on io5 or io6 to work. I just figured it might be like the 07-13 where the volume controls are plug and play and it just depends on if you have that radio.

 

As far as clock spring... you should not need one if you are just going up to a leather steering wheel with controls... you will only need one if you want the heated wheel.

I am just gunshy to buy components and then they may or may not work... As of right now the only thing that seems to work for sure is buying the leather wheel and moving all the WT components over to it, benefit... a leather steering wheel. Other option is to buy the leather wheel and possibly the steering wheel controls works because I have IO6, but we are not 100% sure. Or to buy the wheel with heat and clockspring and possibly that might work too since I have IO6... Again not sure I am enough of a risk taker to try either of the latter.

Everything is plug and play and I can't say how happy I am with it. Everything works perfectly! Here are some pics: (hope this works)

Have you asked GM navigation if the signals from the steering wheels come through the data bus or BCM prior to the radio? I upgraded from the IOB radio to the alpine x110-slv. I was hoping the idatalink module would intercept the steering wheel controls and send them to the alpine head unit but it doesn't work that way. I think since I don't have the BCM programmed for the wheel the signals aren't making a complete circuit.

 

I'll probably pull the wheel control harness and swap it back out for the WT harness sod that I have light in the cruise control module.

Okay, so I talked to the guys at MVI/ GM-Navigation and they told me they don't deal with that kinda stuff. So I emailed Chris White (I think thats his name) and they said that the steering wheel controls relied on the upgraded radio and what I was talking about in my earlier post. They did not say anything about programming, but I also did not ask. And with that said it brings me to Jnuechte's post.

Honestly dude, I would not take the risk with the clock spring. Like MWZotti was saying, the lights on his cruise control don't work with the new wheel and probably require programing. I know for a fact that the heated wheel does not need programming but it would scare me to change the clock spring out and then cruise not work all together. Its up to you and how invested you are in doing the swap.

 

I emailed Chris White again tonight to find out more on his "metric ton or wiring" statement. Frankly I don't believe that at all bc the clusters use the same 30 pin connectors not the back and the cluster and the radio does "talk" because if you change your measurements from U.S. to metric (or vice versa) the temp changes on the radio as well as odometer and speedometer on the cluster. I should know more about that later in the week.

 

The only reason I think it might be a plug and play thing is because of the way he worded it in the email I got from them and the fact that the last model trucks were plug and play. Sorry I did not mean to start any confusion.

 

I have the io3.... I did not realize so many WT's came with io4 radios. Did you have XM in your truck before the swap to i06? I have been looking at doing the io3 to io6 with carplay but I have not pulled the trigger yet. I want to do xm in mine but I want the OEM antenna on top and I don't know how you would get it up there without drilling a hole. Drilling the hole would not be the problem though. The problem I would have is if they wanted you to run a wire from that antenna to the door frame and then under the dash. Thanks of the pics though. Do you have CarPlay?

 

One more question. Do you have to pay for the navigation or is it free if you have the capability? I can't imagine it being free but i thought I would ask before doing it and realizing you have to pay for it, haha. Thanks

I don't think you will have any issues with the clock spring. The only difference between the 2 is the addition of 2 wires that go to the heated wheel plug. The 10 pin connection is a straight thru to a 10 pin on the other side.

 

I think the issue comes about with the cruise only module you have 4 buttons and the light and 10 pins. When you get to the full function wheel you have 14 buttons and the light. So there is probably reverse polarity signaling etc to indicate which buttons are being pushed. Which also leads me to believe the reason my light doesn't work is because the negative(or positive) for the light is on a different pin than before. I haven't had a chance to compare harnesses in detail. I didn't have any clear pics of the full function harness to compare to the WT harness and the upfitter manual didn't show wheel harnesses just the clock spring wiring.

 

If you want to see if the buttons and such work without buying a wheel there is a harness and wheel controls(minus the finger buttons) that a member removed from his wheel because the light didn't work on the cruise. Maybe he will be willing to send to you for experimentation? Look back a few pages.
