trailering package or max tow?

Recommended Posts

I test drove one with the 3.08 and at first I thought it was broke because it had very little get up and go. Ended up with the 3.42 which I had to search for a little bit. Get what you want at the beginning and you won't be disappointed later on. The 3.08 gears were very noticeable with the lack of power..

Lol I did too. I just about walked away from the truck, until they told me what gearing it had.

What is unclear in the GMC pamphlets about the "trailer package" that I got is whether there is a transmission cooler or not.

So I have the 3.42 gears and "trailer package" and I had them add a plug in brake controller, but I forgot to ask about trannie cooler.........the pamplet lists a " engine oil cooler" , but that might not be the trannie or maybe it is a typo.. And in my old Dodge the trannie cooler was a obvious second smaller looking radiator in front of the rad, but nowadays maybe they do it different?

"Auxiliary External Transmission Oil Cooler: Included and only available with 5.3L V8 engine or Snow Plow Prep Package."

If you have a 5.3L, it's got a tranny cooler.

Every GMC truck at my dealer's web site lists the 3.08. They have some nice trucks, but wonder why in the world GM uses that ratio so much? Oh, EPA.

Its all MPG my friend. The problem is once you do that type of gearing you pretty much kill why the reasons to have a truck or what a truck is used for. Really with that type of gearing your better off getting the v6. That gear ratio serves no purpose beyond smoke mirrors and marketing.

Depends on the guy ordering for the dealership. My dealer orders all V8's with the 3.42. Both the GMC and Chevy, all trims. Except max tow, of course.

I'm sorry, I left out some information. 3.42 is standard in the SLE, and 3.08 is standard in the SLT on the GMC.

The 4.3L with 3.23 is standard on the sle if 2wd, the 4wds get the 3.42s, the 3.08's become standard on both if the 5.3 is ordered.

On SLT the 3.08 and 5.3L are standard

From around April 2013 until I took delivery of my 2014 SLE Double Cab Z71 4x4 in September 2013 (my truck was built on 8-22-2013), I must have built around 100 different trucks online. This was while waiting for the Double Cabs, since the Crew Cabs were being built for several months (approximately a very long 6 months) already. Both in the SLT and SLE Z71 4x4 with trailering package, and EVERY TIME the SLE with 5.3 had the 3.42 gears standard, and the SLT with 5.3 had the 3.08 standard.

Maybe it is different without the Trailering Package, just the 4x4, or for 2015? I haven't had the need (OCD) to try and build one in over a year now.

What I posted is from the current order guide. 2014 an 2015 info both as posted.

(but it wouldn't be the first time GM has changed what configurations are standard or available - and providing info about availability and changes is why the document exists)

I just looked at my dealer's site again, and they have a 6.2, and a few 5.3s that don't show the differential ratio. Wonder if that means those are NOT 3.08?

See wha' y'all can find:

I do not want a truck with 3.08 ratio. Course, I'm not buying soon, I don't think, but still want to know what's available.

GuyGene, are you wanting a Chevy or GMC, and what level trim are you looking for? I just went through the search process here in Georgia.

Well, I like the local GM dealer a lot, so GM would be my first choice. It'll be a while before I get another truck, but I like to keep up. Want to drive one soon though.

    • Good question, I don't remember for sure but I believe it was the HD. I will check and get back to you.
    • Point of the post sir was that while both wages and cost are rising EVERYWHERE; the cost is rising faster EVERYWHERE than the ability to buy EVERYWHERE. We're not going down the location rabbit hole. I'm aware of what economic migration is. I've lived in four states including Texas.   It's what "Purchasing Power" means.   I'm not telling you what I think. Your not entitled to your own facts. If you and I were, they wouldn't be facts.    fact /făkt/   noun Knowledge or information based on real occurrences. • Probably a one and done post, but do you have a CEL on the dash? Was having issues with my transmission, fortunately only a week, and it turned out to be the transmission harness. Valve body was in good shape, so new harness with all the sensors attached, new fluid, and filter. Seems to have worked so far?
    • Two interesting tidbits of information which are NOT related were just released.   One, regarding the possible thrust bearing issues / engine failures with the 3.0. Demonworks just did a segment in which they believe they may have found "a" or "the" cause of thrust bearing failures: A missing thrust bearing. If the engine doesn't have all its thrust bearings from the factory, the missing bearing can cause extra play which ends up destroying a nearby thrust bearing which then sends metal through the engine.       Of other importance, Lake Speed Jr released some interest information regarding oil weight selection for the 3.0. Comparisons of:   AcDelco 0w20 Dexos D Mobil 1 ESP x2 0w20 Dexos D Mobil 1 ESP x2 0w30 Mobil 1 ESP x4 0w40. Mobil Delvac 5w40   Spoiler alert: The Mobils are PAO Ester -base and the ACDelco is a Group III base. Mobil shows lower wear in their tests for similar weights. Additive packages between 20-30-40 weight ESP's appear to be the same, but only 0w20 is Dexos D licensed. Wear is even more reduced with 30 and 40 weight ESP although all perform very well and resist shear and provide very similar viscosities within temperature operating ranges in the 3.0.   There are even more surprises, so just go watch it.
    • Hello Guys I'm new to the form,         I just put a 7-inch Rough Country lift on my 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 and I also put a Borla exhaust on it. But I noticed when I'm in park or in neutral and then I rev my truck up really quick there is a bad click noise and I think it's coming from the motor somewhere. Anyways I got a video of it I will attach below I was just wondering if you guys think its rod knock or lifter tick or something like that because I know the AFM kind of made the lifters weak on these trucks.       Thanks!!!!!
