Silver Ice Metallic (or Quicksilver Metallic) paint issues

Thanks for your response, crew.

Here's the thing - I feel like I shouldn't HAVE to have a brand new truck repainted. The shop that'd be doing the work is GM certified, but I worry the value of the truck will drop even more on top of normal depreciation, not to mention it'd never be like factory paint. And who knows what other issues will be introduced.

The service manager's position is that I should just live with it. He's told me that it would "be a mistake" to have it painted and he wouldn't do it. (That's pretty telling right there - I guess customers should be fine with ugly, blotchy paint.) I then brought up the subject of possibly trading vehicles and he told me "no way" GM would do that for this issue. He said that even if they did, it'd be in the form of a "trade-in assist", hinting I'd lose money on the deal. In doing research on the issue, I have found a couple instances where GM has traded vehicles outright so I know it's at least a possibility.

In any event, it's obvious my dealer won't be any help, sans a repaint. I guess it's time to get GM involved directly, although I'm not too hopeful. Worse case is I have the repainting done and if I'm not 100% satisfied, I have them do it again, as many times as it takes until I am. It just sucks that I have to go through all this - I just want a truck I'm happy with and get on with life. I've got mods I'd like to do but don't want to do anything until I get this resolved. I can't even use the truck to haul anything because the bed is bare. I've got a brand new BedRug just sitting in the box waiting to get installed. What's the best arm of GM to contact? Customer Care?

You're LTZ looks great, crew62. I agree that the silver metallic looks great (if flawless), but I'm also partial to white. Like you, I'm also really picky about a vehicles finish. I've owned this truck less than two months and have already waxed it twice. Only hand-wased (by my hands), and only with microfiber towels. My previous truck was a summit white 96 GMC that I bought new. Owned it over 18 years and the original paint looked as good as the day I bought it. But after owning a white truck for so long, I thought I'd change it up and go with the silver. I really do like the color but if I would've known about these issues, I would've went with white again in a heartbeat. Here's what my 96 looked like a few months ago before I traded it in.

I wouldn't want a complete repaint. It's probably nearly impossible to do it as good as good as the factory.

The problem is that it sounds like you've had the truck for a couple of months. My guess is that you have waited to long to expect a replacement truck. If that was to happen, I think that it would have had to have been done pretty much immediately, certainly within the first day or two of ownership.

It sounds like your major complaint is with the hood. If they have offered to paint your hood, I would go that route.

My truck is an '06 Z71 crew cab, greystone in color which is actually silver gray metallic. This truck has about the most perfect paint job of any GM truck and car I have ever owed. No orange peel, no uneven coverage, no differences in color under the clear coat. The bottom line is that any color paint can be applied properly. I have seen some crappy white factory paint jobs.

I have a quick silver GMC and no paint flaw like what your having and like blazd1454 said I as well walked the truck up and down before I took it off the lot, I am very very very picky, but that looks horrible on yours. I wouldn't want them to repaint it because when you go to sell it, a lot of dealerships check with for paint thickness and that affects the value!

You have the paper work on record with GM. So, the repaint of hood and roof could be shown not to be from an accident. It Would not hurt resale.

I see three choices.

1. Get use to it.

2. Have GM repaint the hood and roof.

3. Find an independent shop in your area that is known for quality paint ( there are such) and pay for the repaint of hood and roof.

I would go for # 3. The prep will be nominal and the re-spray should be 1000-1200 dollars? Maybe less. they would remove the hood and only have to mask/cover for the roof.

Are the A pillars good?

i have the same issue on my Colorado but it doesn't look quite as bad as in your picture. There are two or three blotches on the hood about 6 inches in diameter, you have to look at it closely to notice it. its had to notice but i do because i know its there no one else has noticed it. There are also few much smaller patches on one rear quarter panel. In direct sun lite some panels appear to look different. I'm not sure if its a reflection difference because of the angle of the surface picking up the color of the pavement. Just a crazy theory. The two doors will look similar but the front quarter panel looks different. When not in direct sun at a low angle it looks better.

The truck is six months old and has been waxed. i also use synthetic spray wax after washing occasionally, it shines like a SOB .I think the more it shines the worse it looks. I'm going to trade it in in a couple of years for a another truck and inspect that one with a fine tooth comb before accepting it.

Good luck
