Outdoor temp?

Recommended Posts

My outdoor temp gauge was working fine until tonight. It's now off by about 10 deg. It was off by 20 when I started my trip this evening. The truck had been sitting out in the cold for several hours. Anybody have any suggestions?

Are you sure it is on the right setting? F or C?

Did it correct itself after driving for while?

I've read about the temp display in some of cars and how they respond after parking. Temp displayed depends on how current sensor reading compares with sensor reading when shutdown. They're trying to avoid displaying a hot soak reading. I don't know that this is what the truck does.

Edit:

found it for truck:

Outside Temperature Display Will Not Update
postdateicon.pngOctober 7, 2013

The outside temperature display in the radio may not update and displays at 32° F (0° C) on some 2014 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks. (Fig. 10) This condition may have started after disconnecting the battery or reprogramming a module.

The outside temperature will begin to update if driven above 20 mph (32 km/h) for at least five minutes. If the vehicle speed drops below 20 mph, the timer will reset and the display will stop updating. Once the display starts to update, it may take several more minutes of driving above 20 mph for the display to fully update.

Further, if the vehicle sits for at least eight hours, the display will be updated when the ignition is turned on.

The outside temp sensor has no bearing on engine soak temps. The sensor that is affected by engine heat soak is the IAT (inlet air temperature) and it is built into the MAF sensor. The outside temp sensor is located in front of the radiator on a support arm.

The sensor in front of rad might read higher than ambient once the vehicle is shut off and airflow thru the rad ceases.

Different problem that the intake air sensor. Different solution.

sometimes they will get frozen from moisture in the wintertime and are very slow to thaw out? Is that possible?

I noticed that last few days that my outdoor temperature sensor was not updating as I drove around town so I checked here and came across this thread.

It looks like this is still an issue with 2016s. It really ticks me off because it makes the outdoor temperature sensor useless for anything but highway driving.

My old 1990 Beretta had an outdoor temperature sensor and it was one of my favourite things about the car. The fact that the outdoor temperature sensor in a vehicle built 26 years later is not as good ticks me off to no end.
