Looking to purchase this truck in the coming year. Don't need no fancy packages for inside as it will be farm used and to cover me on farm taxs. Have a few questions like y'all to answer for me

Any reason why you would choose gmc or Chevy besides looks?

Power for pulling, is there any really substantial power increase packages out?

Can you cut muffler off and put packs or just straight pipe in place?

What kind of milage are you getting just driving around short trips? And what milage on long trips?

Thanks

I am getting 12 mpg driving around town and about 14.5 mpg on the highway with my 2015. I have 3500 miles on it so far. My past experience is that the 6.0 engine mpg will improve when it breaks in around 25,000 miles.

I don't know about the other questions you ask. I know there are a number of companies that offer tuning packages that will boost hp but will void warranty.

My previous 2500HD (2012) with the 6.0 engine and 3.73 rear end did a little better on mpg than the 2015 with the 4.10 rear end. Both trucks are the same running gear other than the rear end. Both Crew Cabs, 4X4's. The 2500HD is a great heavy duty truck but it is a gas hog.

I hoped the newer would be lil Better buuuuut

Until the EPA forces the big three to put their 3/4-ton and larger trucks on a schedule, you're not likely to see them focus too much on big fuel economy improvements. Basically because they're not being "encouraged" to.

Is one of your hopes to save fuel with the truck? If so, could you make do with a 1/2-ton? Or are they too small for what you need on the farm? The 1/2-tons are on an EPA schedule now, so that's why you're seeing the big three focus so much energy on them.

Yes I'd need a heavier truck 1/2 ton don't have the suspension I need for a 20' trailer with cattle or hay and occasional tractor or skid steer. I don't haul really enuff through the year to justify a diesel. Granted I could use it BUT there is a like between logic and want. Unlike most just buying to drive and dink around in the diesel it would be utilized. But not enuff like they are needed. So 6.0 it will be. Curious to know if they have anything to help milage torque and hp without voiding of warrenty.

The 6.0 has the same power regardless of any package you get and the best gears (4.10) come standard.

Farm mileage will be around 8mpg but you could squeeze 13mpg out empty on a road trip, you will get bad mileage but you are saving $10,000 on fuel by not going diesel so enjoy the lack of emission issues and just keep throwing gas at it.

Good motor, zero problems.

GMC and Chevy are the exact same trucks, zero difference.

If your getting the work truck then the 6.0 is the way to go. It takes about 120,000 miles for the diesel to pay for iteself unless you do a lot of towing.

Diesel is a $1.20 more a gallon in Michigan right now. So the differential in savings at the pump is negligble, meaning a 13 mpg gas is as good as a 17 mpg diesel (or thereabouts). Leave the mufflers on too, no real savings.

Regarding exhaust ... if you alter the exhaust including the muffler and forward, usually a new tune is needed & more power is available (as much as 20-40 RWHP just a guess /w air intake and a few more things ...) but your factory warranty is gone, a dealer warranty is possible if the dealer does the work & wants to guarentee it through the dealer only ... not all dealers offer this service with dealer warranty

All HD25's 6.0 gas ONLY come with the 4.10 rear end which is very low and good for pulling (and aftermarket offers a 4.56, even lower - great for pulling and horrible on the road mpg wise)

In Mass were paying about $ 2.50 - 3 / gal for regular, varies alot by city & station

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
