Compass, GPS, NAV and OnStar all failing

My truck has been at dealer going on FIVE WEEKS now for this issue. No wifi, flakey nav, etc ... All issues described. The truck has 1000 miles. Dealer has had it longer then I've owned it. They stuck me in a FN Buick all winter, was brand new, now has 2k miles. Almost been in a few head on's and barley able to get the damn thing out of my driveway (I live in the sticks). 2015 Sierra All Terrain (52k dollars). To say I'm upset is a understatement.

What really burns me is the piss poor lack of cominuacation with GM/OnStar/AT&T. As a employee of General Motors I'm totally embarrassed to be writing this, and I work in QC myself. I'm utterly appalled. Just got a email stating how my wifi is going to expire and I'm paying on a truck I've barley driven. Again, to say I want OnStar to compinsate me and then some is a understatement.

Dealer called me (after a MONTH) and said the module was bad (I told them that when I took it in). Said have no idea when they will get a replacement in.

... My truck is packed in a dealer lot, been scuffled around for almost 5 weeks, if there's so much a mark, scuff, ding, etc ... Yours truly will completely go off the deep end. I'm one of "those" guys.

... I have multiple complaints about the truck, absolute garbage. Drivers seat been replaced (wrinkled leather and rocks and "squeaks"), rattles, rear end noise, erratic steering, horrible throttle response, transmission has NO idea what it wants to do, horrible headlights, fit and finish, bizarre under carriage noises, I could just carry on and on.

I have big time buyers remorse. I wish I kept my 12 SLT.

I spent 25 minutes filling out a customer survey with absoutely NO response (over a month ago). I'm on the fence about getting a attorney and persuing a buyback. But why ? .. For another piece of garbage ?

GM servicing reps, where are you ? ... If you have the stones, contact me before I escalate this myself. Feel lucky this is the only place I've expressed my concerns. Or, if you'd like, I could elaborate on how you (we) cut costs, piss poor "pushing" engineering, etc.

I urge someone to contact me before I really cut loose.

Forgot to mention, everything quit working about 2 weeks prior to me dumping it at dealer because I could NOT handle any more of "the advanced technical team" @ OnStar. I gave up and dumped it in the dealers hands. I have a feeling this is just the beginning with this truck.

Thank you GM for robbing me of 50+k dollars. I'm embarassed to be a employee.

OK - My rig is now back up to speed - I waited until the part (new antenna) was in Stock, painted to match, and ready to install. Took it in This Morning at 9 AM. It was done by Noon.

Just picked it up - and it works fine. Rainy day here in the Pacific Northwest - so we'll see if the part is redesigned to accomodate the water issue -

Anyhow - success on mine.

Now to grouse with Onstar about extension of their "free Trial" services. Wish me luck.

Thanks all for the info and support on these issues.

OnStar gave me an extension of their services upon request with zero hassle... Oh, and once your trial expires tell them their prices are too steep to continue service and they will bring those down vice allowing you to disconnect! Did this on my last two trucks and haggled the price down both times.

Good to hear they figured your truck out, they're still clueless with mine. Past week 5 and on to week 6 with mine. This is a joke.

I wouldn't let them keep mine. I drove the loaner long enough for them to diagnose and order my antennae (6 hours) then "patiently" waited 3 weeks for the part to come in and be painted. Install took about 2 hours and im happy to say so far the repair is holding. Bad rains and snow for the last week and its still working as advertised! Fingers crossed it stays that way. No way I was leaving my brand new 2015 Denali on their lot for 3 weeks!

That's how I feel. My 52k truck was made only about 2 weeks prior to me buying it then straight to my garage ... Then a month later to the dealer, and that's where it's been since. I'm extremely particular with everything I own. This is making my skin crawl. Only good that has come out of it is, it's never seen salt this winter. Of the month I did have it, I was in Florida for 2 weeks too. It's like I didn't even buy it, but paying for it.

It's the "VCIS" modules failing in these .... If yours hasn't, it will. Have fun. On national back order. Dealers are actually SHIPPING AND SELLING new vehicles with all of the features NOT working. The antenna is not the only issue going on here (lack of shielded wires and water seeping in). No wonder the truck is already slated for a total ground up next year-2. I feel like such a sucker for trading in my almost paid off, mint, 27k mile 12 SLT. I want it back.

The Onstar module for my truck took less than a week and a half to come in after they ordered it. Had it installed on Wednesday and had to call Onstar to have it reactivated and at the same time I was able to get my trial extended for the time it was down. So far so good !!!

They replaced the antenna about a month ago so I should be good now.

I got the "GPS red line of death" on mine on day two. Nav put me in the Atlantic Ocean. Compass then started acting erratic and then didn't work this morning. Onstar guy said he could see my Nav and knew I wasnt driving on the Ocean.

Said I had a "b2462 error code" and that my antenna was not operating as it should be. Onstar also flashing red on my mirror. Bad shark fin? Going in the shop tomorrow. :-(

Add me to the list. Have a service appt on Friday (the 13th - omen?) Service Manager said there's a known problem with the system but it could be a simple fix or need parts. Apparently it's not a universal problem and could be any number of different things. Also told me its affecting all GM products. They had a Yukon and LaCross just come through. Wish me luck!

Another victim, the seal on my "shark fin" had a pencil size gap in it. Noticed right from the get go my navigation/gps wasn't working correctly and now red light on "on star". Dealer service dude said it is most likely the "shark" antenna but wants to run diagnostics first. Said they have worked on a couple that required the "ceiling" in the truck to be replaced due to mold etc....

Question: How many have gotten some onstar trial time back?

Posted

I did. Onstar was very good about that. Although I did call them when my Onstar stopped working so they had record of it.

New sharkfin replaced on Friday, everything working again...still looking for some repayment from the dealer, given that I've had to bring this thing back twice (will be three times with the lights issue) in the first few weeks.

Anyone else getting some type of repayment considerations from the dealer? I've asked for $250, or 1/2 a month's payment, so far, my ask has not been replied to.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
