With a "new" truck, I think I will finally start a build thread. So here we start...

First up, new outer tie rods as once he hit 45mph it starts the death wobble. Also new driver side door hinge pins. Already have a question. How do you replace these door hinge pins? I played with it for a few minutes but I must be having a brain fart as I can't seem to get the old worn pins out...ugh. I also have all my oil change supplies from my old truck and it all matches what I need so I will be changing the oil. I was able to clean up the dash and put my dash rug from the old truck as well. Added bonus, even though it's a "4x4" it does indeed have the skid plates. Best part I got the truck for under $3k OTD. Awesome!

Does anyone have a picture of the engine bay of this generation with the dual battery set up? It looks like I have the necessary wiring but want to make sure before I throw in a second battery. I have the battery from the old truck and it's the same type and age as what's in so it would be cool to have a dual battery set up. That's it for now. More repairs and pics to come.

Well so far...

Oil change

Both outer tie rod ends changed

Checked hub bearings...good so far

Replaced lower door pins on driver's door. Now I'll need to do the uppers.

Topped off fluids

Installed my old truck's floor mats...perfect fit

Installed K&N air filter from old truck...glad they took same filter

Aired up tires...all four low & spare was flat

Took it out for a test drive. Still has a shimmy from tires & other worn suspension parts. Tires are unbelievably noisy. Now I know what I don't want to replace them.

Tore apart my driver door interior. Cleaned a bunch of crap out of the bottom. Checked my switches but didn't get anywhere with my dead mirrors & driver's window. Also took out 4wd switch & got 2hi & 4auto working. No luck on 4hi & 4lo yet. Finally lubed all my door hinges & hood release. Making progress is good.

Yesterday I took on the throttle body. I got about 100k miles worth of crap off the plate. Still need to get the other 200k miles worth...dang I need to do the EGR delete on this beast. Also going to be looking at picking up some more parts for it today...

Inner tie rods

Bulbs (third brake light, corner markers, DRLs)

4 wheel drive switch (I'm actually going to order it...cheaper then local places)

Well another step complete...all new tires. I got a set of Primewell Valera HTs. I went back to stock size (LT245/75R16) as I didn't need anything bigger. SOOOOOOOO much quieter and the death wobble shake it gone. Now I can actually hear what the truck sounds like instead of just the chopped up tires. Also stopped by the auto parts store and picked up a mess of parts that I'll be installing the next few days. This includes my inner tie rods so I can get the alignment done before too many days go by on new tires.

As promised, more pics.

Today was productive...

Inner tie rods replaced, tomorrow it'll get an alignment

Replaced rear passenger outer door handle

Replaced driver side high beam bulb

Replaced PCV valve

Still have several exterior bulbs to replace but the important ones work now. I'll save the rest of my replacement parts for this weekend.

That seems like a lot of truck for 3k! Looks good!

Thanks. I had a friend at the dealer so I got the truck for cost. The biggest thing with the truck is cosmetics. It drives strong. Doesn't take nearly as much accel pedal to get up to speed compared to the old '06. I think this truck is going to really have some pull once i get a chance to load it up.

Yesterday I was able to get the alignment done. It wasn't too far off except for the toe-in. I knew that though since I only eye balled after the tie rod replacements.

Well in between several other errands I managed to get my third brake light bulbs replaced. Also I got the upper door hinge pins replaced on my driver door. Now the door closes so easy & with hardly any effort. Even the wife was impressed with my progress as she drove it earlier.

Got the rest of the exterior lights replaced, DRL and the corner markers. Everything works again. Still need to get a few lights replaced on the interior but nothing major. Also noted that I have the infamous pump rub on the transfer case...yippie (sarcastically speaking).

So I managed to install the battery from my old truck. Now I have the factory dual battery setup working. Seems to be working so far. Just had to get a couple a bolt for the terminals. I did remember to pull the 40a fuse from the Stud 1. Oh & cleaned my MAF sensor since it was black. See how she runs tomorrow.

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
