classic pump rub

as the title suggests, my new to me truck has servere pump rub. I bought the thruck last week and went to do a fluid change on the major components a few days ago. I opened the transfer case drain and instead of 2 quarts of dirty fluid, I got 2 drops of metalic sludge. This transfer case is dead! 4x4 works and turns the driveshaft but the case whines. I have called and searched endlessly for a new case and they are crazy expensive. Cheapest I could find was 800 for one in Wisconsin. I'm in ohio. I have decided the rebuild it myself.

 

I have never done a rebuild on a transfer case but have done lots of reading on it. It is definitely within my abilties. what I want to know is, are there any special tools that I might need? Also, I'm buying a kit that has everything including a chain and a new case made of aluminum for $425. It's a boorg(?) Chain. Does this price seem fair?

 

Any advice or ideas are welcome. Thanks guys!

If you think you can do it go for it... I would make sure to throw in a case saver.

I don't have any advice. I'm currently in the same boat though. For now I JB welded it until I come across a new case. Since I'm not real comfortable about rebuilding it, I'm opting to replace it. I do ask that you get us updated on your progress. I'm curious how it will turn out for you.

Bought it from a construction company. It was a work truck

Will solve this issue in the future.

Yeah they knew! the guy said they got tired of putting money into it. He couldn't figure out the grinding. But that's why I paid 750 for the thing!
