98 Mystery Instrument Cluster

Okay so I start the truck gauges work fine. Put in reverse everything blacks out and none work. Same for neutral and overdrive. Put it in third they come back on and work fine. Same for second. Put it in first everything blacks out and none work again. I'm so confused at this point. And to add to it. I plugged a code reader in, no codes but they gauges work perfectly fine through all gears... Any ideas??
