The cap ... or the entire distributor?

 

If the whole distributor assembly, set the engine at TDC on the #1 cylinder, remove the cap, make note as to where the rotor is pointing. Remove the bolt and holding tab, and lift straight out. When you re-install, you want the rotor pointing in exactly the same direction as BEFORE you pulled it up (unless the timing has jumped due to a worn or busted timing chain - in that case, just point the rotor toward the #1 tower on the distributor cap, leaving room for timing adjustment in both directions).

 

It's really very simple. Oh how I miss this setup in vehicles today ... :(
