I'd say rod, first cylinder driver side.

I blew only two engines.. a 305 and a 350. Upon inspecting the one that did not go through the block(the 305), I found a crushed crank journal. Repair waste of time on both.

 

From then on it was moving to next generation engines. You can still keep the appearance of what is there, get better short block. It is not bad luck, don't even feel bad about it. It's a long running old error.

 

the other theory on those was the block ribs walking/twisting. Passenger side intake rear to drive side front has the clues.

 

The good thing about that noise..when you buy a truck with an nv3500..you'll have learned rod from tranny noise. :)
