2002 Silverado 1500 Turbo

I have a 2002 Silverado 1500 5.3l V8 and have always wanted to turbo charge it. There is a couple different ways I had brewing up in my head.

1) turbo charge the truck the way you would normally do it.

2) use a turbo charger from a Duramax and retrofit it to work on a gas motor.

The only reason I think about doing it the second way is because I saw it done on a show where they put a turbo from a Powerstroke and put it in a Dotson and it seemed to work pretty well.

Does anyone have any advise on how I would do this? Has anyone ever done this to their vehicle?

As long as you have the right tools, it will be possible. You will also need a tuner for it so you can get proper fuel air ratio.

Do you know if I would need to make any mods?

Well turbo set ups have different routing for exhaust, because they spool off of the exhaust. You would also need an intercooler for the oil, lines to take the oil there and back, and you'd have to fabricate headers, and custom parts to make it all fit. Do lots of research to see what it will take to turbo a 5.3 before you dive in. The guys from road kill don't have motors that are controlled by computers so they are easier to work on. keep that in mind while planning this project!

You'd need new exhaust manifolds, hot plumbing to turbo, intake side plumbing to turbo, boosted plumbing to intercooler, to intake. Oil lines and fittings to turbo. Tune.

There are turbo kits that are pretty much bolt on, but from what I've seen most are pretty poorly designed.

Supercharger is a much easier install and better IMO.

We talked about a rotsun style project before

So I think it is safe to say that if you still daily this truck and it's not just a secondary project, you may not want to strap a turbo to it
